not for the faint of heart March 2, 2008 Reviewer:  B. Gnoz "bgnoz" (Martinez, GA United States)  See all my reviews >

We recently bought four pieces from this collection (printer stand, computer desk, corner unit and file cabinet). Together, they make a nice home office set. All these units have the following in common:

– small dimensions.... somewhat low in height, and shallow. Good for tight spaces.

– solid wood made up of 2" strips. Small knots and finger joints visible, but not too noticeable.

– bolt-together construction. Simple tools included, but not recommended... use your own.

– thin finish... smells like an oil finish, probably just a varnish.

– wood runners for drawers. Not terribly smooth

This set is a good alternative to press-board, laminated office furniture. The character is somewhat rustic, but pleasant. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy use, but for a home office it should serve well.

[We] went ahead and bought two, since we wanted a match for the other pieces. I've got a good amount of experience building furniture, have a good variety of hand tools (planes and chisels), enjoy tinkering, and view assembly problems as interesting puzzles. If this does not describe you, you might be best off passing on this piece of the collection.

As others have reported, there were some fractured and scratched parts in the box. It was clear that they left the factory in this shape. [...]

I encountered a number of small problems with the assembly, and had to resort to mild modifications. If you are up to the challenge and decide to purchase the unit, pay close attention to:

– the back panel. On both our units, it was cut too wide, which spread the sides apart and threw off the runners on the bottom (file) drawer. I planed about 1/8" off the sides by hand, which took very little time and helped solve the problem.

– the drawer guides for the bottom (file) drawer need attention in order to make them operate smoothly. I had to move the runner out on the right side of the drawer for both our units. The screws are in slotted holes... loosen them, get the drawer to run smoothly, and then drill new holes in the circular holes to lock them in place (don't leave the screws in the slotted holes – they aren't countersunk and the screws may drag on the frame).

– the upper drawers may need some attention, or at least some swapping to find the best fit. There's some variation in the manufacturing (surprise, surprise), which makes them ride differently on the wooden guides.

The first unit took nearly two hours to assemble, as I investigated the problems and found solutions. The second one took about half an hour, since I knew what to look for. It was interesting to see that they have obviously made some adjustments to the design – both our units had an extra piece glued to the center spreader, and one set of holes that had been filled and then re-drilled.

After completing the build, you'll have a file cabinet that is best for light use only. There is considerable slop in the movement, and the gaps in the drawers are fairly wide (1/8-3/16"). The drawers do not all match up perfectly, but from a distance the piece is still charming. And it should serve well for light needs, such as filing bills and other home needs.

Of all the pieces, this one is the only one for which I would advise caution. The others are simple and fast to build – this one requires attention. This is not surprising – a file cabinet is much more complex than a table, and fitting drawers is a bit finicky even when building furniture from scratch.

This piece does compliment the others well, however, and is a decent purchase for the capable buyer.

not worth the trouble! September 21, 2007 Reviewer:  Carrie M "Carrie M." (Sherborn, MA USA)  See all my reviews >

Like the other reviewers, this product is impossible to assemble! It took my husband and I two nights (and many additional tools) to get it all together. The holes were drilled incorrectly and one drawer was manufactured wrong. We ordered a new drawer part, which arrived quickly, but in the end, the drawers do not close (they overlap eachother). I would be willing to keep something that has minor flaws but this is pretty much a mess from top to bottom. I'm returning it and hoping Target will accept it back as-is. No way I'm disassembling this beast!! I'm disappointed, too, because it is a great color and would have looked great.

Poor design & looks cheap assembled June 12, 2008 Reviewer:  Disapointed Consumer (Tampa, FL)  See all my reviews >

It is very easy to figure out and put together, but the pieces are not machined with precision and the unit doesn't line up. The drawers go in off center and the file drawer wouldn't go in without lifting the drawer above it. The back panel didn't align correctly.
I looks very cheap once assembled because it isn't square. During assembly we tried very hard to tap it into place, but the end result was disppointing.

We got a bad one June 28, 2008 Reviewer:  bgnoz See all my reviews >

I wrote a previous review after buying and assembling two of these units. We went ahead and got another (we have lots of files), but I think we pressed our luck. The third one came in with a missing piece (probably lost in shipping - the box was in poor shape), and some holes were so badly aligned that we could not assemble it.

We returned it instead, which was painless at our local Target. We still need another one, so we're going to give it another try.

Difficult to assemble September 10, 2007 Reviewer:  Recent Graduate (New York)  See all my reviews >

This product is very difficult to assemble because the pieces do not match up properly. I'm in the midst of putting it together and am not at all certain it will work out. Though the end product would be nice, if you can't assemble it, the product is flawed.

poor workmanship October 17, 2006 Reviewer:  Lisa Pevey Real Name See all my reviews >

This product, made in Thailand, shows extremely poor workmanship, and is an exceptionally poor value. Nothing lined up like it should have, the holes for the bolts were drilled in the wrong places, and I would have returned it had it not been so much trouble. The drawers are hard to open due to the problem of everything being off.

Looks great! Very pleased on how easy it was to put together. Nicer than I thought it would be.

Not what I expected. April 9, 2006 Reviewer:  Iza Rivera Real Name (Texas)  See all my reviews >

I order this cabinet 2 times, and for the 2nd time I'm sending it back. Both times the cabinet came with 1 or more parts broken, not by the shipping company but by the manufactory home.On both times the parts broken were pack on the midle of the box so is easy to figure out that who ever pack this, did not check the parts before putting all in the box. I know is not Target fault, but is ironic that you can only get this by buying it on line.I'm very desapointed of the quality of this cabinet, to bad cause this was exactly what I was looking for!

not bad/not good May 1, 2005 Reviewer:  Kristen Downer (Lawrence, KS USA)  See all my reviews >

I saw the other reviews but I hoped anyway. The cabinet came quickly and was easy to put together, but one drawer had a hole punched through it. Target is taking care of the problem and I should have a replacement soon. Filing drawer doesn't close flush to the cabinet, but not really an issue for me. Two things to know about the filing drawer that aren't in the description. The sides are high but basically rectangles with the centers cut out and there is no bottom to the drawer itself. Overall, I'm happy enough with the cabinet. It's the right size and a pretty color.
