Description
This is a satirical novel about an American senator, Elias Gotobed, who, on a visit to England, gladly accepts the hospitality of his hosts while at the same time criticizing their society--including a ruthlessly ambitious gold-digger and a sleazy breach-of-promise suit. Trollope's alternate title, "The Chronicle of a Winter at Dillsborough", is far more descriptive of the book, which has nothing to do with American politics.
