Fatally Flawed - problem with controller causes lockups. February 2, 2005 Reviewer:  Robert C. Nasir Real Name (Redford Twp, MI USA)  See all my reviews >

An excellent idea, with a fatally flawed implementation. It appears to be a limitation of the midi controller - drums will fail to sound intermittantly.

An except from my (so far unanswered) request for support from Ion-Audio.com:

I have found a problem with my new Ion IED05 Electronic Drum Set - the drums appear to conflict, perhaps in the MIDI interface, perhaps within the Alesis controller.

When playing the drums, a pad will fail to sound intermittantly (and occasionally, the whole system will mute momentarily).

I hope this isn't the first you've heard of this issue, and that a fix is available.

Of course, I've checked the connections, checked to be sure I'm hitting the pads squarely and in the center, tried swapping pads (though the issue affects all of them, not just the snare), etc.

If fact, I can often reproduce the problem by simply, repeatedly striking any two pads together, one a split-second after the other. When it happens, the second appears to mute the first, before the first fully produces a tone.

great, with some resolved problems January 6, 2009 Reviewer:  drummer1234 (delaware)  See all my reviews >

im a moderately expirienced drummer who needed a cheap electronic drumset to help me record. this drumset is great. first, i would like to confront many of the issues previously stated. ive heard that some have bought it and had some of the pads not work. this happened with my snare. i then switched the cable that connected it to the brain with another i had lying around, and the problem was solved. another problem ive heard is with the kick pedal. it feels very awkward at first if you are used to acoustic drum pedals, but thare are ways around using them. i am personally buying two expansion packs for this. one of these extra pads, i will hook up to the kick part, so i can use double bass, the next two for an extra tom and cymbal, and the other for what is labeled perc1, which is other cool sounds. the kit does shake a little while playing, but its tolerable. for those who are wondering, the rack is metal with strong plastic clamps, so it should hold up well in the long run. overall, this set is great for something to use in a dorm/apartment or something to record with. if you are looking for an electronic drumset and are short on change, this is a must buy.

nice product August 13, 2008 Reviewer:  OGG See all my reviews >

This is a nice kit. If you're used to an acoustic kit, keep in mind that electronic drum kits are a completely different way of playing the drums. Its not going to feel, sound, or do anything like an acoustic set. Neither is any electronic kit under 3000 dollars, but even those don't get there.

Pros: Dynamic articulation, Stereo sound, ability to expand, compact design, easy to navigate.

Cons: Well for me, its size. I'm 6ft tall, so I had to change the placement of some things around. Pedal controls are not touch sensitive, they just trigger.

overall: if you don't have a lot of money and you're happy with the features, buy it. its worth it. Do not buy a dd502 or another Meledi product. If you have more money, get an alesis or a yamaha brand kit. Word of warning. Stick with the name brand, and sub brands of name brand products. Why? Because if these other brands were really as great as they make them look and sound, why don't real businesses sell them?

Salute to the Manufacturer May 3, 2007 Reviewer:  Carlo "Carlo" (Manila, Philippines)  See all my reviews >

I salute the manufacturer for producing the most affordable electronic drums. For the price, you would truly get more than what you pay for. Finally, a drumset that can be played quietly when practicing alone, then played out loud when playing with friends/bandmates. However, the kick pedal is really an issue that they should immediately address or else, customers would be furious. Mine broke after just 2 days. What I did then was, and what I would recommend to the others who bought this product, is to buy the optional, additional pads and use one of which as your bass drum. Then use the pedal from a regular drumkit. For me, it effectively solves the issue and I just don't know why the manufacturers haven't designed it this way. Just dont forget to adjust the pedal so that the stem would be shorter, and would not hit the pads with much impact.

The product is incomparable with the Roland V-drums, but so is the price. If you are just a hobbyist, well it serves the same purpose of a drumset that doesn't destroy your neighbors eardrums, including your own. But if you have spare cash, buy the Roland V-drums (x5 the price), for superior drumming experience.

I just hope that the manufacturer would offer optional pedals for the high hat because it doesnt seem sturdy either. If it breaks, I plan to replace it with the Roland hi-hat pedal, however, [...] I'm not yet sure if it will be compatible with Ion's module.

iDM01 repeat problem September 12, 2005 Reviewer:  Laurie Barber See all my reviews >

We have also had a problem with repeating. On our set the bass pedal was repeating two or more times when pressed only once. On contacting ION we were told how to correct the problem, however it was never resolved. Now the bass does not sound at all. On close inspection of the pedal, the contact point is cracked. For the amount of use that the foot pedals receive I feel that a stronger material should have been used. I have contacted support at ION twice about this new problem and have not had any response.
