Never get rid of your receipt

I received this as a gift and the dowel was broken on the back of the chair. I contacted the company and they will not replace the dowel that is broken because there is no longer a receipt. Even after I offered to pay for the dowel they will not replace it. The company requests on the instruction sheet that you do not return your purchase to the store, but then they do nothing to help satisfy the customer. So in the future I will save all my receipts and return to the store, because there is no such thing as customer service anymore.
