Description
For many young people, peer pressure is a constant reality. While some situations they have to face are relatively benign, others may be unsafe and involve potentially life-altering choices. Decisions that young people may have to make include whether or not to abuse illegal drugs, to have sex, to cheat on an exam, to steal in order to pass an initiation, or to commit an act of vandalism. When faced with pressure to participate in unsafe or illegal activities, it is critical for an individual to have developed refusal skills that hold up under pressure. In many cases, there may not be anyone else present to help young people make good choices, so they must rely on an established set of principles, their own good judgment, refusal skills and avoidance strategies. Successfully doing so can mean the difference between a positive outcome and a lifelong regret.
