Description
Hold a world in the palm of your hand. Developed by NASA, the EcoSphere is a complete, closed bio-regenerative ecological system, sealed in hand blown glass. Contains earth, water, air, and life(algae, shrimp, and microbes that provide each other with nutrients). All this 5.25" pod needs to sustain itself is indirect sunlight. A conversation starter when displayed alone or with the 4" sphere(sold separately).

Don't worry about starving shrimps

Very cool gift. It's low maintenance - just give it the requisite hours of either artificial or indirect natural light and make sure it's in room temperature and there's nothing else you need to do. The shrimp don't actually eat the algae, they eat the micro-organisms within the seawater. If the ecospheres are properly cared for, I believe the record for oldest ecosphere is 10 years and they're a nice combination of aesthetics and science.

This makes a lovely gift, especially for someone who is somewhat difficult to shop for. Included was a small booklet about the EcoSphere; they can even be replaced within a certain time frame.
The shrimp are not very active, but I expect them to "wake up" after they have been inside for a while. They are all alive and moving a little.
The box was very well packed, though it could have been smaller in size. Not really a big deal.

No one knows how beautiful life can be until one sees how little is needed. We wake up in the life, and see all already. Starting small is lovely too. Crawl up with the primal (no monkeys, just laughing about...they work hard to be) ooze and see how the sun feeds all and normally too. Shrimp don't eat anything you don't eat and that includes larvae as their own. They eat grass and that is what is growing inside with light. The fish comes in when they or the shrimp dies (from larvae eating) and that's all you see - pure hunger for it dying never. Break the glass to release the fish asunder when it gets too big for it inside. That's all and cruelty free. Cruelty is a mind that matters enough to speak it once or twice to you. I received my EcoSphere Pod as a gift and can't say enough how cool it is. The little shrimps took a few days to get active but now they roam around and are great to watch. They are the perfect no maintainence pets.

I admit I've always thought these things were cool - but this xmas thought it would make a perfect gift for my dad. He's a nature lover too, but his lifestyle wouldn't really suit pets (and fish well... you can't just spring mandatory tank cleaning on someone as a "present").
So I figured this would be perfect - critters without maintenance. The globe arrived today with perfect branches and 4 active little shrimp. After reading other reviews, I was worried I'd find broken branch remnants and ex-shrimp - but not so.
Be warned - it is pricey for the size. Although the glass dome acts to magnify the shrimp for viewing, definitely spring for the $200 huge dome if you know for sure the recipient will like it. But for initial gifts - this size is great, and the company has an upgrade policy that gives a discount to "get that larger size you always wanted"... Seriously, those were their own words. lol
