Description
Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom and sides' even, tightly fitting lids seals in moisture. Knob is safe to 400 degrees. . The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. The black cooking surface on the skillet is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non–reactive with food. This 6 Qt enamel Dutch oven is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing Can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cook tops, and in oven. Not recommended in microwaves, outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the cookware's original appearance.

I absolutely love this pot. You can do so much with it, no kitchen should be without it.
You can easily make "one pot meals" because it's large enough to accommodate all the food and the walls are thick enough to spread the heat evenly. Saute some veggies, then cook rice and braise the meat at the same time. Everything will finish together if you time it correctly.
It's perfect for deep frying, shallow frying, pot roasts, soups, steaming veggies, braising/broasting meats, cooking rice, and the list goes on.
The glaze isn't non-stick (is NOT), but it cleans up really well with almost no effort. I've burned chicken drippings onto the bottom and was able to just wipe it out with a sponge and soapy water.
Pros: Excellent heat retention, easy to clean, exceptionally even heating, and is very versatile (can go from stove top to oven and back again.)
Cons: It is a very heavy pot at 15 lbs, this makes washing difficult. Cast iron can fracture if dropped (it doesn't dent), and the glaze can chip if handled improperly.
I have no trouble with the weight, but I'm also a 200 lb man. Daintier cooks may want to stay away.
Handy tip: If you want to use high oven heat, replace the plastic knob with a metal knob (the kind used for dresser knobs and such).
Trivia: This is technically called a french oven, but is often called a "dutch oven" instead. A dutch oven is just an unglazed french oven, they're practically the same. The name "dutch oven" comes from the dutch casting process, not from the origin of the cookware itself.

Made in China

I should not have to receive the product in order to find out for the first time that it was made in China. I am disappointed in Target for hiding this information deemed important to me and to other consumers. Consider the problems with products coming out of China for a moment (poisonous dog food, tooth paste, etc.) and you can see why this is important. If I had known this fact, I would not have ordered it. But because it was made by Lodge, a well known American manufacturer of cast iron cooking utensils, I thought I knew what I was getting. This will make me think twice before ordering from Target again unless they disclose exactly where the product was made.

I have several pieces of Lodge cookware. Mostly the plain cast iron. But when Lodge made the color series, I ran out and got this pot. It is large and cooks everything wonderfully. Cleans up nice and the color is really pretty and bright. It is just as good as my "French" brand cast iron set, but way cheaper. If you take care and season your Lodge products, they will last you a lifetime and beyond.

I bought this over 6 months ago.. I love the fact that it heats up quickly and evenly.. Cooking stews, sauces and even deep frying is easy when you have the proper cookware that distributes heat evenly. I have another cast iron dutch oven but tend to use this more because I can "see" the food better since the inside enamel is a light color plus clean up is much easier then the usual cast iron. I do tend to cook a lot with tomato and other acidic ingredients, this pot does not leak out iron into your food hence no metallic taste in the mouth.. Plus too much iron can't be all that healthy either..unless of course your anemic..
Only con factor is like all good cookware it is on the heavy side. Would recommend to anyone who really loves to cook!

My hb and I love cast iron - he's from New Orleans and makes gumbos and etoufees and creoles in it. I use the iron skillets to make cornbread, etc. So, when they came out with this kind of iron pots/skillets, we were ready to try it -- and so far so good - it's nice-looking.
Also, we just saw one at a store near us for $10 more than the Target price - even if we had had to pay shipping, it still would have come out a bit cheaper. The pot was delivered to us in record time, too -- we're pleased!
Lodge is a good product...I'm glad Target is carrying it.
