Excellent choice for beginner or travel November 14, 2006 Reviewer:  C. Rigby Real Name (USA)  See all my reviews >

NOVEMBER 16, 2006

This is a repackaged Janome Harmony 1017.

I purchased this with the idea that I'd have this 3/4 size machine for craft circles and could later give it to my daughter when she's old enough to learn on it.

I learned to sew three years ago on a Simplicity Creative Spirit Plus and while I still enjoy that machine, learning on this would have made things much easier on me!

The Green Hello Kitty Sewing Machine comes with extra size 15 plastic bobbins, extra needles, a seam ripper, buttonhole hole presser foot.

You will have to purchase scissors, small screwdriver, lint brush, sewing machine oil, pins, and other basics on your own. I HIGHLY suggest a magnetic seam guide -- this does have a metal plate to affix it to.

The machine itself is well built and sews like a dream. The preset stitches are nice and neat, and novices will appreciate only having to worry about tension. No stress over stitch width or length. Once you learn to keep things straight, the neat little stitches will make you look like an expert!

It runs quietly, and the slow 550 stiches per minute speed means you have more control as a beginner.

I'm an advanced beginner and I'm not sure I have the patience at this speed to be making slip covers, but it IS possible. You'll just have to have patience on long seams like that.

I've made cloth diapers with this (lots of layers!) and padded cloth books ( more layers!) and I had no problem sewing on various thickness of various fabrics.

It's a low-shank machine so the presser feet I have for my full-size machine can be used on this one as well. (Check Nancy's Notions online for deals on low-shank feet!)

MORE ADVICE FOR NOVICES:

1) I got a laptop bag from my local Target (Worldbound All Purpose Lap Top Tote 12 1/2 inches high x 17 1/2 inches wide x 6 1/4 inches deep) and it fits this machine perfectly with extra pockets for tools, fabric, and other items. So I can now carry this baby to craft circle in one neat package!

2) Keep the plastic bobbins it comes with for storing thread, but get Size 15 METAL bobbins for actual sewing. Plastic ones are too light.

3) Make sure you have put the bobbin spool in so it turns clockwise when you pull it while looking at it in the metal casing. Put it in backwards and you will snarl the thread up.

4) Make sure the thread "catches" on the little hook part of the bobbin case so it isn't flying loose.

5) Use a small screwdriver to adjust the tension screw on the bobbin case. Too tight and the thread gets stuck, too loose and it gets out of the little hook.

6) When you thread your sewing needle, the last step is to catch it on the tiny hook. This keeps the thread feeding nicely. Use the right kind of needle for your project and change it often. Schmertz Universal needles are great for most projects but they do get dull over use and they aren't going to work for everything. (ex: metallic thread needles have a bigger eye for metallic threads, denim needles for denim, etc.)

7) Always pull a few inches of both the top thread and the lower bobbin thread out behind the machine when you start a seam so it doesn't get raveled up in the sewing. Catch it in the sewing and you snarl it all up.

8) Gutterman thread = less lint in your machine to clog it up. There's a reason why cheap thread is cheap. If you pull a little out and hold it to the light and see it is all furry -- that's the lint that going to come off and clog your machine innards!

9) With regular maintenance there is no reason why this little workhorse shouldn't keep running smoothly. And the maintaining isn't hard -- sewing machine oil as per the manual. Then before and after each project use a can of air to blast out lint in the lower bobbin area, a lint brush for what the can of air can't reach and you are good to go.

10) Adjust the top tension for the type of fabric you are using. Also, your needle size. If they aren't right, the fabric will bunch, not feed nicely, or get weird on you.

DECEMBER 19, 2007 UPDATE

I originally reviewed this November 15, 2006. I've now had it a bit over a year and wanted to update.

I have since taught 4 moms and one 9 year old to sew on this machine because it is user-friendly. I'm about to teach a six year old who wants to make a "super hero" cape with every confidence that he can do it with supervision.

With a magnetic seam guide on the metal plate, the slow 550 stitches per minute speed, and not having to deal with stitch length or tension gave them the courage to take the sewing plunge and all were pleased with their diapers, skirts, pants, curtains, altered T-shirts, and dresses.

I've done all my household sewing and mending on it all year -- haven't broken out the full size since I bought this just because it is that much faster to deal with.

Because of it's size and portability, I've taken it to craft circles and to church and cranked out all the costumes for TWO Christmas pageant productions without a hitch!

I've def. gotten my money's worth on this one. It has surpassed my expectations for a pared down 3/4 size machine and continues to perform well!

Great Little Machine January 16, 2008 Reviewer:  SugarQueen (Oahu, Hawaii)  See all my reviews >

I love this sewing machine! It winds bobbins perfect and sews smooth and quiet. Instructions to wind the bobbin and thread the machine are given in the illustrated manual. It's so lightweight and portable. Perfect for teaching children or beginners to sew. I got this for my daughters ages 6 and 10 and they love it! They tried sewing on my Viking but it was a little too fast for them to control. In my opinion, I think the speed on this machine is perfect. I can see someone wanting more speed if they were always sewing very long seams.

I've read other reviews that people had problems with the bobbin or the thread tension. The first few stitches I sewed the thread tension was a little unbalanced and adjusting the thread tension dial didn't make much of a difference. I followed the advice of other reviewers and adjusted the screw just a little on the bobbin case. By removing the bobbin (with the bobbin still in the bobbin case) hold the thread and let the bobbin fall. If it falls too fast, tighten the screw. If it doesn't fall, loosen the screw. When it falls just 1-2 inches that should be perfect tension. Now it sews perfectly balanced stitches! I did not switch to metal bobbins as others suggested. I use the plastic bobbins that the machine came with and that little adjustment of the screw is all you need. I feel that if the machine came with plastic bobbins then the manufacturer designed it to be used with plastic bobbins. I also use Coats & Clark all purpose thread (nothing fancy) and that works fine.

This machine has all the basic stitches a beginner sewer needs...straight stitch, zig-zag, buttonholes and a slower stitching speed. The stitches are preset and you cannot adjust the stitch length and width. Therefore you cannot make a wide zig-zag satin stitch. I agree that a stitch length and width dial would have made the machine that much better. Perhaps a speed control lever and 1-step auto buttonhole too...That would be the perfect beginner machine along with the size, weight and portability. Other than that...this machine is perfect!

I can see someone outgrowing this machine and wanting something with more features...yet, keeping this machine because it's so lightweight, portable and oh so CUTE!

It's the perfect size for travel and great for scrapbooking too. The size, weight, portability and price...I have no complaints!

Included with the machine is: The instruction manual, standard snap-on presser foot, buttonhole presser foot, felt for spool pin, extra needles, three plastic bobbins, a seam ripper, dust cover and of course a foot pedal.

This machine unlike the Blue Hello Kitty sewing machine has a built-in light and an on/off switch.

FYI - This seems to be the same machine as the Kenmore Mini Ultra (which also had great reviews) and the Janome 3/4 size sewing machine. Just as the Blue Hello Kitty Sewing Machine is the same as the Kenmore half-size portable sewing machine and the Janome sew mini.

A Gr8 Cute Sewing Machine February 15, 2007 Reviewer:  CameoLace65 "TMB" (Kailua-Kona, HI USA)  See all my reviews >

I recieved this cute sewing machine within a week and I am very happy with it! It's light and easy to use. I've read a lot of comments about the bobbin being the main problem - machine locking up - bobbin thread is very loose - the thread all bunches up..... and from my past experiences with this type of bobbin all U need to do is to make the necessary adjustments with the bobbin thread tension.

Most new sewing machine with this type of bobbin comes very tight and all U need to do is make the adjustiments.

Give this test a try b4 U return the sewing machine!

To test the bobbin thread tension, remove the bobbin case and bobbin and hold it by suspending it by the thread. Jerk it once or twice. If the tension is correct, the thread will unwind by about an inch or two.

If the tension is too tight, it does not unwind at all.

If the tension is too loose, it will drop too much.

To adjust, turn the small screw on the side of the bobbin case.

That's all U need to do.

Happy Sewing
Aloha! :)

Be careful of what you need August 6, 2007 Reviewer:  Mom of Many "Laurie" (Augusta, GA USA)  See all my reviews >

I ordered this for my eight year old as I have a Pfaff computerized machine and was not willing to take a risk on that. The Hello Kitty machine is limited by two things...there are no adjustments for stitch length (all stitches are close together) nor stitch width (i.e...making zigzags narrower or wider). Our first project was a felt purse and she wished to do a zigzag decorative stitch, which really looked like a satin stitch and took FOREVER to go around a 10 inch square. I returned it and purchased a Singer at Sears for a comparable price with many more features, including length and width adjustments. Believe me, as you get better at sewing and need to baste or do decorative stitching...length and width adjustments are seemingly basic features! Unless you are a diehard Kitty fan, this machine is just not versatile enough even for an eight year old beginner. I would go for a two stitch machine (straight and zigzag) with the length and width adjustments over some of the fancier stitches on this one if price were a great consideration. You really need those features.

A dreamy quiet machine February 2, 2007 Reviewer:  SF Grad Student (San Francisco, CA United States)  See all my reviews >

I didn't know a sewing machine could be so quiet. And it's got metal parts for all the important bits inside (I looked). And in general, it just sews like a dream. Sooooo much better than my old machine.

If you're a speed demon, then this isn't the machine for you. The speed isn't adjustable, but I'm a slowish beginner sewer, so am very happy. I would definitely recommend it for beginners, or someone looking for a straight-forward sewing experience. It even does button holes.

I thought the manual was very clear, except for one bit that the ultimate beginner wouldn't know: When threading up the left side, to tension the thread, you do really need to pull tightly to get the thread to 'click' in place.

Not Just For Kids! March 8, 2008 Reviewer:  Leslie H. Kung "Baby Wearing Instructor" Real Name (Cedar Rapids, IA)  See all my reviews >

I'm an inexperienced seamstress, having only had Home Economics instruction on sewing in the 6th grade.

I decided a few months ago to purchase this sewing machine, since it seemed like it would be easy to use, and I was right!

I've used it as a real workhorse since getting it, and I was pretty sure I would break the needle on some of the tougher jobs, but it has held up remarkably well.

Multiple layers of denim, corduroy, just thick, thick stuff! (I'm making baby carriers, mei tais, onbuhimos, buckle tais . . . things that NEED to be sturdily constructed because a baby's safety depends on it!)

I love my Hello Kitty sewing machine.
It has been more than adequate for my needs.

Easy to use, SOOO cute: 5 stars! ^_^

Machine is absolutely great for the value January 26, 2008 Reviewer:  mamaw vicki (Lafayette, Indiana)  See all my reviews >

I bought this machine in the store for my grandaughter and it works great. I own Viking sewing machines and wanted a small machine for her to sew when she comes to grandma's home. It has a great stitch and actually sews. I went back and got another one to take on "trips" with me for sewing. I recomend this sewing machine . Since it actually sews, my grandaughter was not frustrated as she was with the "toy " ones that chain sew.

GREAT FIRST SEWING MACHINE!!! December 10, 2008 Reviewer:  K. Pierce See all my reviews >

I am a novice to sewing and got this machine for my birthday based on the reviews that I read. IT IS TERRIFIC! It's so user friendly, I was sewing up a storm in minutes. I've only had it a month and I've whipped up some new kitchen curtains, a runner for my dining room, tote bags, purses and scarves. I'm addicted! This machine is absolutely worth the money!

LOVE IT. January 3, 2007 Reviewer:  Hello Kat See all my reviews >

It took a week to come in, and I ran to the door the second i got it. It's so cute, and was well worth the anticipation. If you're looking to buy this for its color, it really is green. It looks a little more blue in the picture, but it's a little bit more green than it looks. It's not a cheapo, either. Heavy duty, and perfect. I've been sewing by hand, and didn't know a thing about using a sewing machine. But the instructions provided are perfect and I feel like a professional ALREADY. I bought a Singer before this, but i returned it and i'm glad I did. Don't debate on whether or not to buy this, just buy it. It's well worth it.
