Shanghai Futon January 18, 2009 Reviewer:  Satisfied College Student "Satisfied College Student" (St. Louis, MO)  See all my reviews >

I just put this futon together today. I was a little worried after reading many bad reviews for the product, but it seems to be pretty good for my purposes. Many reviews said that it looked cheap and the wooden slats broke easily. I think the important thing to keep in mind is that this couch is best for a college student or recent graduate with a small space. It doesn't look top quality, but for its purpose and price, it is pretty adorable. It is small, but comfortably sits two average-sized people. The cushions are pretty soft and it is nice how the arms can be adjusted to several different heights so it can become a chaise sort of lounge chair (good for reading), or even a cot for the impromptu overnight guest. As for the wooden slats breaking, from the way the frame is made, it seems like it would be really easy to just put a wooden board down as support if this happens. I'm a college student with a small living room and a lot of brightly colored furniture and wall art, and this fits in my space perfectly--I have the cutest couch now out of all my friends--the pattern is very retro. This is actually the cutest futon I have found--I think they're normally kind of tacky looking. Do keep in mind that the bottom cushion is a slightly different green than the back cushion--which I think is complimentary, but if you're a very matchy matchy sort of a person, might not like. So, for the chic mother with a Crate and Barrel decorated house and small children jumping on the furniture, I'd say no. But for a college student on a budget who still wants to have style in a small space, I'd say yes. And, do tell your friends to sit with care instead of plopping themselves down.
