It did an honest job but...

We had heavy rain not long ago in Chicagoland. Some garden mulch washed into a window well, clogging the drain. The rain fell and fell, filling the window well with water. Eventually, with the drain clogged, the glass broke and a river of water came flowing into our finished basement. Our year-old carpet was soaked, and a few pieces of furniture were so soiled we had to throw them away. Insurance covered the carpet and couch but the real problem started well after the insurance claim was paid. Ugly mold started to grow everywhere. I took the advice of a neighbor and called a disaster service. They wanted to drill holes in my basement wood-paneled walls so that air could dry the moisture behind. What they wanted as payment was enough to buy a decent used car. So I started searching the Web for alternatives. Somehow I stumbled on steam cleaners as a way to kill mold spores and I bought this McCulloch. I was happy at first. The mold seemed to die right before my eyes. But then the water ran out. The problem with a cleaner like this is that you have to refill it a lot and it takes a long time to reheat after each use. After a frustrating weekend of refilling and waiting, refilling and waiting, I went back to the Web and did some more clicking. The more I searched the more the word "vapor" kept popping up. So I Googled "steam vs. vapor" and an Epinions article arguing the advantages of vapor surfaced. I contacted a nearby company mentioned in the article. The company said one of their customers, Rutgers University, purchased a number of vapor cleaners for mold removal. So I contacted Rutgers. It wasn't easy finding someone willing and able to talk intelligently about mold and vapor. But when I did, I was impressed with what the guy said. So I wrote a few more emails to the company. I found out that some vapor cleaners come with a continuous flow feature so that you do not have to keep reheating. These continuous flow cleaners are more expensive, I found out, and I had already invested a pretty penny in the McCulloch with a husband out of work. So I asked the company if they had a used unit I could purchase. They said they are not in the business of selling previously-owned cleaners but that they had one older model that had served as a demo. I bought it instantly. This turned out to be one of the best purchases of my forty-two years. Not only did this continuous flow model kill the mold spores better and quicker than the McCulloch (with a little effort my husband was able to remove the paneling and get to the backside), it cleans the shower, stove, and bathroom & kitchen floors with hardly any effort at all. And it does it all without the use of toxic chemicals. And without having to stop to reheat--even once. Thank you Vapor-Systems! I'm very happy with my vapor steamer. My advice to anyone reading this review is that you spend a few extra bucks for a continuous flow model. And vapor does seem hotter and better. I still give the McCulloch three stars. Cleaning without chemicals is the way of the future. And it did an honest job. But not having continious flow is a real disadvantage in my opinion.

I just got my cleaner in today and I have been using it nonstop since I opened it! It did exactically what it is supposed to do, and did a very nice job. I have a 50 year old stove in my house that had alot of black build-up around one of the burners. We have lived here for 2 years and I have tried countless cleaning products on this stove and none of them touched it. I was just using the cleaner to clean my stove and it started scrubbing away the build-up - I am very impressed!
My only complaint and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that the sponge attachment, the most useful in my opinion, didn't last very long at all. It fell apart after about 30 min. You can order more of these, they are not made to last forever, but I think I should have gotten more use out of it. Don't let that discourage you from this cleaner though, it has done a very good job!

I found this easy to assemble and ease of use however, it didn't perform and I returned it the very next day. The steam output is weak and the temperature isn't hot enough to remove the grime, I could put my hand in directly in front of the flow and not get burned. I tried this unit on the oven door, shower and ceramic floor tile before giving up and packing it up for a return.

I am in love with this little machine. I got this fully expecting it to do a mediocre job. It totally surpassed my expectations. I was impressed with the quality of the attachments. I primarily got this to use as a household cleaner and it works great. My walls were stained from my puppy "marking" and it completely dissolved the mess and removed the odor. The steam comes out with a surprising amount of force and it is hot. When my husband came home from work he thought I had repainted, that's how clean it was. I used the squeegee to clean the mirrors and that was great too. I can't wait to use it in the bathroom!

As long as you read and follow the directions, this product works fatastically. It cleaned stains on my kitchen floor that had been there for months and nothing else could remove. It took so much less time to clean the bathroom and now my carpets don't smell like dog anymore. I love it!

I like the product, but you have to empty and fill the tank each time you use it, without getting any liquid on the machinery that it in between the outside and the water tank. Disconcerting.
