Great Bike for Beginners

I got into cycling when gas prices were too much to handle. I bought this bike because I couldn't afford to buy a nicer bike from my local bike shop. Overall, I think this bike is awesome. I think the people who wrote bad reviews about this bike forgot one important factor - all department store bikes should be checked (and tuned up if needed) by a certified bicycle technician. The people who assemble department store bikes don't really know what they are doing, and that's why some people are unhappy with bikes purchased at Target or other store. Take this bike to your local bike shop (I go to REI) and ask for a tune-up.
Once properly tuned, this bike is perfect for an entry-level cyclist who wants a decent road bike. I'm a 5'4 female and this men's bike fits me well. It's very lightweight so it's fast. I love all the gears, so little hills are not a problem (it's pretty flat where I live). The seat is very uncomfortable, so I had to purchase an additional seat cover with more padding.
Even though this is a "hybrid" bike, I would keep this thing on the road. The thin 700c tires are made for the road and I wouldn't trust them on any other kind of terrain. There are no shocks on the frame, so you'll feel every bump. Even the cracks on the side walk can get annoying.
I highly recommend this bike for anyone who wants a decent budget road bike. I've had this bike for a year and I ride it 4 times a week to work and back for a total of 15 miles daily. I ride all year as long as the weather is dry. I bring in my bike for a tune up every six months. I've never had a problem with this bike. It still feels like new.
I'd also like to mention that when I took my bike in for its first tune up, the bike tech noticed that the handle bars were bent. I called the customer service number in the manual and they sent me a replacement part right away. So five stars for the Pacific Cycle customer service!

Bought 2 Tourist bikes at bakersfield ca target. My son's bike work's fine so far. As for mine it won't shift in any of the 1st gears, makes grinding noises.
I called Target and talked to the manager. She said to bring it back to the store and it will be replaced.
I rode it in the higher gears and it shifted quietly and quickly. A lot faster than my 1987 Schwimm mountain bike.
I'll write later after I get the replacement.

So with the rising gas prices I decided it was time to get back on a bike to cut some costs. I haven't ridden a bike in something like 10-12 years nor did I want to spend a ton of money on a bike that could possibly get stolen or wrecked in the city. I really like the look, the weight, and the way this bike rides, but seriously watch out for potholes because there is NO shock absorption on this sucker. I almost went flying, haha! But overall, I really like it. Good price, great for someone just getting back into riding to save some money on gas!

Pros:
*Low price point for all aluminum rig and quality components
*Light weight
*Good looking
Cons:
*Feels like frame might be on the small side for taller riders (i'm 6' / 195 with a 32" inseam). Fits me pretty well, though.
*Definitely needs a tuneup before it's ready for real work. (I don't expect Target to have bike experts, so this is expected.)
I bought this bike this week to prep for my first real ride (Tour De Cure) in Sept. I've been a casual bike rider for years and got tired of riding a very heavy steel framed MTB for my 12-15 mile road rides at 12 MPH.
In store, I was looking for another bike (a hybrid). I found this bike & pulled it off the rack to check it out. It is light (I need to get on the scale with it, because I can't find specs). Lighter is faster. I now average 15mph with less effort.
This bike is not a hybrid. It's a road bike with a straight bar. I wouldn't take this bike off the road at all.
All Aluminum frame, forks, 700c wheels, seat post, etc. It has good components for a bike at this price point. Unless you think Pacific Cycle / Schwinn makes a crappy frame/fork, you're getting a bike that would cost a lot more for the same components on a similar frame.
Of course, coming off the floor from Target, it needs a tune-up, which I'll do myself. If you're not the type to do your own bike work, take it to a bike shop to get brakes & derailleurs adjusted. After a few miles, you'll probably need to get at least one wheel trued. I hit a deep crack at 17mph today. Now front wheel needs to be trued. user error.
In summary, if you're looking for a bike at a big box store, this is probably one of the best bikes you'll find. If you're someone who has been riding a bigger price bike and are looking for a new bike, you'll probably want to spend 4x what this cost to move up, so this probably isn't the bike for you.

Quality looking parts unlike other department store bikes. I shopped at target. Bike is fast and perfect for my 220, 6ft frame. I had to pay my local bike shop 15 to adjust the drive train. The bike was put together ok other than that. I adjusted the brakes and took off the reflectors. Added slime to the tires. I've been on some night rides and love this bike. Mine came with ergonomic handles but other tourist had the regular ones. I prefer mine. No complaints here. Seat is comfy. It doesn't need to be big. remember guys that is is good to have that indent on the seat to avoid male issues. The riding position is forward which puts you in control. Shifting is smooth and the bike glides. Really what more do you get from a expensive road bike? I want the hybrid bars so your hands are always near the shifter and brakes. Brakes leave nothing to be desired. I look forward to hundreds of miles and will be getting a computer for the bike to track it all. Mike H Sacramento CA
100 mile update:
I've now put on some very enjoyable miles on this bike. I got a flat just like every one else with this bike. The slime didn't help because the hole was too big. The rim tape busted causing the flat. These tubes(long schrader valve)are special order from the lbs(local bike shop). I bought new tape 11 or 12mm for road wheels so it wouldn't flatten again. I bought a schrader to presta valve adapter for 5 buck and these valves need to be around 48mm because of the high profile rims. Now with presta valves I can pick up tubes at any shop. Other than the tubes I have had no reliability issues. The Schwinn seat post rack sold at target doesn't fit unless you want to rig it with other parts. Everyone is in amazement of the 250 price!

I actually bought two of these bikes. It looks great, lightweight, and best of all, fast. The problem is that it didn't work right and the freewheel keeps making a noise. The freewheel is located on the rear of the wheel and it's a combination of plates that the chain rides on when you switch gears.
The first one I bought, the freewheel makes a noise when you ride the bike at a moderate pace. I tried fixing it,but to no avail. The other problem is that the bike is not adjusted correctly regarding gear changes and brakes so I returned the bike about a month later.
A few weeks later I bought another one in hopes that this one is not defective. Same problem, freewheel keeps making a noise so I paid $40 to a Local Bike Shop to tune it up. They adjusted the gears, brakes, and repacked the crankshaft. They told me that the noise was due to a defective freewheel and that it has to be replaced if I want the noise to stop. I called Schwinn and they said they would send me another freewheel but it was back ordered. I finally took the bike back to Target to make a return and ate the $ loss.
Ended up buying a similar bike at a sports store for $ on sale and is very happy with the purchase and everything is adjusted and works correctly.

Frame size (center of bb to top of seat tube): 18 inches. Standover height: about 29.5 inches where you would stand in front of the seat. Weight: about 25 pounds with a seat bag and headlight added and the reflectors removed.
The frame and fork seem to be solidly made with decent welds and a pretty cool paint job.
You will need to adjust the brakes and the derailleurs unless your Target assembler does a better job than mine. On a short test ride it was difficult to shift the front derailleur and the rear one would drop out of gear or downshift all by itself. You can fix this. The front derailleur wasn't square with the chainrings so it was grinding and hard to shift. The rear one was a total mess, but with it properly adjusted I'm surprised how well an Altus works. It shifts smoothly and fairly quietly, even under stress. It stays in gear. If you can't do this yourself take it to an LBS.
I changed the stem because I wanted the handlebars raised and will add a stem riser because I want them a little higher still. This is personal preference, not the bike's fault.
Inflated to 100 PSI like the sidewall says, the front tire pushed part way off the rim when I hit a minor bump. Inflated to 90 PSI no problems on the next (45 minutes or so) test ride and I hit much bigger bumps.
With the brakes adjusted they do stop the bike and don't squeal. They however are nothing to write home about, they are just brakes.
The bike was totally dry when I got it home from the store so get some bike lube and lubricate the hubs, chain, and joints on the brakes.
When you buy a bike from an LBS they do all this for you. But you pay for it in the price of the bike and don't learn anything. For the price the Tourist is a great bike. It's light and fast. I like it.

I bought this bike for 15-30 miles rides and longer charity events. I've put 400 miles on in it including two 75 miles rides.
Doesn't have the precision shifting of a more expensive bike, but otherwise the performance is similar to that of some expensive bikes I rode.
I'm 5'8" and the frame fits fine, but the handle bars were way too low. I had to purchase an adjustable stem. Toe clips or clipless pedals are also a must have upgrade.
I thought the seat was fine. Just have to put some miles in to get your body used to it. I did put a gel seat cover on for the 150 mile charity ride.
I really like the feel of the handle bar grips and the position of the shifters.
No problems with flats even after hitting a curb at speed.
However, I was involved in a group crash at speed and my bike was the only one that came out with a bent wheel(rear).
This bike is not a comfort bike, but is designed for a faster pace on smooth roads.
Overall, I've been very happy with it and will keep it until I someday upgrade to a carbon road bike.

Just purchased this bike today (ON SALE-an expensive price.00) at Target. Took it directly from Target to local bike shop. They said it was a great bike, they just wanted to put better brakes on because the ones that came with the bike sucked.
