Description

It's been a good run, but this really probably ought to be the final volume in the Water Music label's Pure Trance series. If you want them all, go for the budget-priced box set that includes all four volumes, and best wishes to you. Everyone else will get by fine with one or two of the individual discs. Of those, the fourth is perhaps the most unapologetically utilitarian; the beats are all inexorable and high powered, and the sweet piano and synthesized-strings environment for those beats is unusually consistent throughout -- if you can really hear a substantive difference between, say, Wavetraxx's "Peace," Nathan Profit's "Acceleration," and Ron Van Den Beuken's "Timeless," then you're probably spending way, way too much time listening to dance music. "Energy," by Zenith DJ with the Energy Squad, distinguishes itself from the rest of the program by means of unbelievably annoying fake tracking glitches, and Moby is the class of the program, as usual, with his clubwise appropriation of previously recorded female vocals ("In This World"). Soda Club's more soulful take on the Spice Girls format is always lots of fun, and the 12" mix of their "Someday" is another highlight track. Everything else is perfectly serviceable and pretty much forgettable. Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
