What a Treat! July 18, 2008 Reviewer:  booklover6460 "Teresa" (Winston-Salem, NC, USA)  See all my reviews >

We love our new ice cream maker. However, the first time we tried to make ice cream, we made the mistake of having the fruit in pieces too large to flow through the blender stick. In addition, my mother-in-law had moved the gel canister from the basement chest freezer to the upstairs refrigerator freezer. The temperature of the chest freezer is much colder.

So we made a second batch. We started with the canister in our basement freezer and cut our fruit up in small chunks. And we ended up with some of the best tasting strawberry ice cream I've ever had!

It's definitely a wonderful purchase!

well...umm... April 3, 2009 Reviewer:  M. Morelli Real Name See all my reviews >

I just wanted to say that I haven't gotten this or any other ice cream maker yet and these reviews are making it a lot more difficult. I would like to point out that theses makers are SUPPOSED to shut off after the ice cream or sorbet thickens to an almost soft serve consistency. Its usually very soupy at first but what you have to do is put it in the freezer and allow it to set for 2 -3 hours before its really ready to eat. All of these reviews about all the makers on the target site are about the thickness of the ice cream. Its not like instant pudding people...just tell me how loud it is, if its worth the money, cleanup time, and if you would buy it again...please...thank you

Good for a "couple" June 4, 2008 Reviewer:  Amanda S. Grear "Mandy G" Real Name (St Louis MO)  See all my reviews >

I received this ice cream maker as a Christmas present when my husband and I were first married. We used it occasionally and it works just fine. Actually, I still use it now (almost 6 yrs later) and it still works fine. The only issue is that it makes a small amount and now we have to kiddos that want in on some of the fun! The ice cream is quite soft when you're done...not good for a cone, but once it's been in the freezer for a bit it's good to go.

Poor performance May 26, 2008 Reviewer:  Suzanne "Babi" (Orlando)  See all my reviews >

Don't bother with this product, the motor shuts off 30 minutes into the process. It'll be hours before there's any ice cream from this maker. I suggest investing a few more dollars and get something that works.

not ice cream May 26, 2008 Reviewer:  Margie A. Wirth "margiewirth" (New York City, NY United States)  See all my reviews >

I thought I would try to make my own ice cream. I was wrong with this appliance. The consistency was basically a frozen blender style drink. The motor died within two to four months of owning the item.

I've worked in a dairy and this makes great ice cream! June 29, 2009 Reviewer:  TVH (Florida)  See all my reviews >

I believe most folks who says it didn't work are not freezing it overnight before the first use. Just because you can't hear the liquid inside sloshing around doesn't mean it's cold enough. I made that mistake and ended up with cold slush. Then I froze the cannister overnight and the next day it made perfect mint choc chip. And no homemade ice cream is going to be rock hard when it's done - professional brands have -150 degree(F) 'hardening rooms' where they put the freshly made mixture in for at least two weeks before they serve it.

How can you possibly put this in a box and sell it? May 19, 2009 Reviewer:  Nucleosynthesis (Nauru)  See all my reviews >

Does the executive board of Rival think they can make money by putting random electronic parts in a box, sell it for [..], and hope a slim percentage of their customers are lazy enough to lose the receipt? It didn't even make ICE CREAM! THAT'S THE ONLY THING IT HAS TO DO! Perhaps you would enjoy a nice bowl of my cold milk?

No, I didn't think so. So, I'm guessing you wouldn't like a LOUD motorized spatula for [..], either, then...huh?

Decent Value April 14, 2009 Reviewer:  AKL (Minnesota)  See all my reviews >

I just bought this and it is making my 2nd batch of ice cream/frozen yogurt. The first batch was fine. I let it go for 40 minutes and it was of soft serve consistency at first. After leaving in the freezer though - it was normal ice cream consistency.
It is a bit loud, but...that's ok - it was also only a cheaper price.
I think if I were to buy another ice cream maker, I might spend a bit of money on it. I didn't this time b/c I don't know how much I will use it.

I Love Ice Cream!! June 12, 2009 Reviewer:  Andilu (Bay Area, CA)  See all my reviews >

I have had this little cutie for about a year now, and it still works great and provides me with lots of delicious frozen yogurt and ice cream! I have made so many different flavors and all have turned out delicious! I love that I can have some "soft serve" style right out of the machine, and then put the rest in the freezer for a more traditional ice cream.

As mentioned in other reviews, it is a little bit loud, but if that's the price I have to pay for delicious homemade ice cream I can't complain!

I always leave the gel container in the freezer so that it is ready at a moments notice if I decide I want to make some ice cream. The other parts come apart easy enough to make cleaning a breeze...and it is small enough to barely take up any room in the cupboard.

I really can't think of anything negative to say about this little guy!

Bad Ice Cream Maker July 9, 2009 Reviewer:  Dining Diva "S" (USA)  See all my reviews >

I wish I'd read these reviews before buying this Rival Ice Cream maker. It was such a disappointment. The only worthwhile thing was the ice cream recipe on the outside of the box. Sure the machine was noisy--but who cares? I don't live in a monastery. The little detail that I really hated about this ice cream maker is that IT DIDN'T MAKE ICECREAM! And regardless of whatever know-it-alls think that it should be apparent that you have to freeze the ice cream for 2-3 hours etc...I would just like to say that the MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS INDICATED DIFFERENTLY.

All the same, I followed common sense and put my unfrozen ice milk mixture in the freezer (after the motor died). Even so, what I ended up with was not icecream--but more like frozen sugarmilk slushy. Not what I wanted, not what I paid for. At least Target took it back right away with no hassle.
