Description
With ten studio releases and almost as many live recordings available, there will surely be some people saying "not more Masada" Sanhedrin is a collection of studio outtakes, recorded at eight different sessions from 1994 through 1997. All of these tunes but one ("Nefesh") have been released in other takes before, but that's not really the point. This band has become one of the finest jazz ensembles of the last several decades, and there will probably come a time when folks will be drooling over any previously unreleased scraps the same way they do today over lost Monk and Coltrane recordings. The improvisations and interactions -- not to mention the dynamics -- can change from one performance to the next, and it's interesting to hear how these players approach the tunes on different takes. The package is lovely, with liner notes from all the bandmembers, and, of course, the playing is phenomenal. Whether you need more Masada right now is a personal decision, but Tzadik simply seems to be taking a proactive approach to the inevitable raiding of the Zorn vaults and the clamoring for unheard material. Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
