Solid, beautiful bookcase

For the price, the 5-shelf bookcase provides a great value, and is tough to beat. Construction is excellent, with solid wood for the sides and top and bottom. All surfaces are painted in white semi-gloss, and can be easily wiped to rid markings from books etc. The shelves are painted on top, bottom, and all edges, so there is no exposed wood. Hardware is aluminum circular tighteners, and fit is very precise. The back is thin wood, rather than cardboard as most in same price range. Other candidates for similar price used manufactured wood product for main panels, which can be subject to cracking or chipping.
The only problem was that the back wood panels had such a precise fit into the recess, that I had to loosen some of the circular tighteners, bow the back panels, then apply the screws to flatten. Once done, the unit is quite rigid.
The nice thing is that the product was available at Target stores, saving on expensive shipping. The other Target 5-shelf white bookcase for $120 required $... shipping. For the base price, it appeared better made vs comparably priced units as office stores.
My daughter really loves her new bookcase, and it will last with its good construction.

We purchased this bookshelf for my 7 yr old daughter's room. I love the flexibility for the shelving and the construction is very good. One or two of the holes for the base were a little off, but worked out OK. A few of the holes for the backing were also a bit off, but also worked out. One the pieces had a marking on it, but we decided to keep it anyway and fix it up ourselves. Overall the product seems like an excellent value and would recommend it.

1) The base of the shelf was broken apart out of the box and must be replaced in order to assemble the unit., Unfortunately, we live 170 miles (round trip) from the nearest Target which is going to make it very difficult to return the unit or get a replacement part in a timely manner. 2) The only "Hardwood" in the shelf is what may be ground up in the MDF (the Target description says "Hardwood". This unit is 100% MDF. Even the box reads, "Wood & MDF"... all lies. This is not my first furniture purchase from Target, but it may be my last. For the money ($ on sale), it isn't a bad looking shelf, but don't lie to me (bait and switch). Target needs to be more "Chic" and less "Shabby".
