I needed to replace my old sewing machine that belonged to my mother. This one had all the features I needed and was very affordable. It has worked like a dream from day one. I've read the other reviews here that say the bobbin gets jammed but I haven't experienced this at all. I do know (from dealing with other finicky machines) that many machines jam if you thread them without having the presser foot in the up position. This could mess up the top thread tension and cause a knot in the bobbin area below.

I have not been working this machine for a long time, but I found it EXTREMELY easy to get up and running, and have been very satisfied with the results I've had.
From what I read about bobbin jams, I don't know what to say. However, after working in a costume studio with numerous machines of different price and dependability, I have discovered that ALL machines have the potential for jams. The biggest thing to know is adjusting the tensions based on the needle and fabric type.
Overall, this Singer is a very great machine for someone who isn't looking for a lot of extra functions and is doing practically any project.

I purchased this machine 3 days ago. I had no problem setting it up and using it and I found the instructions easy to understand and I felt the illustrations were easy to follow too. It didn't take me too long to get my machine up and running.
I bought this machine to replace an older machine I purchased used. I was thrilled to have a machine that worked properly! After testing it out on scrap fabric, I got out my daughter's skating dress and began sewing it. I was thrilled with the results!
Then today as I was sewing, the bobbin thread became jammed and no matter what I did to try and fix the problem, nothing changed. After trying a few different things, I gave up and decided to take the machine back. I was disappointed because it had worked so well for me until that point. I had hopes that the negative reviews I had read here could be wrong. The machine went back to the store today and we purchased a different machine to replace it. I would not reccomend this machine.

I bought this machine at Christmas. It worked great for the 1st 2 weeks and then..thread bunching. It was stuck in the bobbin case so bad, you couldn't pull it out with needlenose pliers. The repair shop had it for 1 week and [price] later I was told it was a problem with tension. I just started sewing with it again and once again..bunching. I loosened the tension a couple of notches. Sewed a few stitches and..bunching. I'm sewing with calico, it doesn't get much easier than that. This [..] will eventually cost me as much as a high dollar sewing machine. It's definitely going back!! That is, if I can keep from pitching it off my balcony.

It is not operator error...it is the machine

I purchased this machine despite it's not so great reviews in hope that maybe it was operator error, so much for that idea. The machine set up was easy and it worked great the first couple of times then the thread got caught in the bobbin and around the hook. I went through the instruction manual and tried every possible solution listed to fix the problem and it continued to happen. After wasting an entire afternoon trying to fix this hopeless machine I returned it and bought a Brother machine instead.
