no crank, no tilt, arrived moldy April 26, 2008 Reviewer:  JanB (San Carlos, CA USA)  See all my reviews >

I ordered two of these, partly based on the Smith & Hawken name, which does not appear anywhere on the box or the umbrella or the instructions.

The umbrellas are nice and heavy, feel and look solid and good quality.

However, of the two umbrellas, one arrived moldy and rusted, but completely packaged -- did not look like it had been returned.

I tried out the second one, but it has a pull string, not a crank as it says in the item in description. I was not able to open it fully enough to put the pin in to keep it open.

The umbrella also does not have tilt, despite the fact that this was listed as having that on the description.

Would give it 0 stars, but not an option, you have to give at least 1.

Smith & Hawken® 2008 Umbrella April 29, 2008 Reviewer:  Remington See all my reviews >

Umbrella totally not as described. No tilt feature, no crank, and VERY difficult to pull up and secure with pin. Also it arrived already rusted. [...] I would not recommend purchasing this item, (especially since you can't return it in the store!)

Horrible Construction- 0 stars April 24, 2009 Reviewer:  Gregg Sweet Real Name See all my reviews >

Bought this umbrella two months ago....put it on my deck one month ago....one of the fabric supports has already broken and the upper part of the center pole is warped. The wood used in the construction of this product is sub-standard and should not be considered for outdoor use. Wood cracks very easily. We have other pieces in the 2008 collection that do not have wood components and are very pleased. This umbrella is the worst purchase I've made from target in the last ten years. Stay away from this product.

total garbage July 14, 2008 Reviewer:  D. Colburn Real Name See all my reviews >

My wife brought this home today. We removed it from the packaging and found the metal parts corroded, including the ferrule threads. The only explanation I can think of is that target sold as new an item that had been purchased, used, and returned. I'm not talking about a blemish on the brasswork, the item was so badly corroded I doubt it could be assembled. I didn't try.

Horrible! December 13, 2008 Reviewer:  love target "DP" (Chicago, IL)  See all my reviews >

I bought this umbrella at full price at the store when the rest of the furniture set was 50% off. I love the furniture, however the cushions faded terribly within a month. This umbrella broke after 3 months of very light use. The wooden pole snapped right in half! Of course this was past the 30 day refund policy. Mine was also slightly corroded around the metal fittings, however the pole actually broke beneath that. I was very disappointed in the quality of this piece. Buyer beware.

Inferior Construction Quality June 9, 2009 Reviewer:  Disappointed (Virginia)  See all my reviews >

The shade is fine but the wooden pole rotted and snapped just below the metal sprocket after several months of use. The wood appears to be of inferior quality and is already split in several places. This product should not be left outdoors.

Beautiful looking set, great quality for price July 6, 2008 Reviewer:  A. Carlson Real Name (California)  See all my reviews >

We purchased 2 loveseats, 2 dining chairs, dining table, umbrella, and base from Target last month when they went on clearance. We were going to buy them all anyway at regular price -- seeing as that was a great deal -- but when we went back a few days later and saw them on clearance, we couldn't pass it up.

Got everything home. NO BROKEN PIECES. Installation of everything took about 2 hours, so not bad. When installing, be careful not to tighten the bolts too much when putting the arms on, or they may crack. Also, be sure you are using the right length bolts, as some of the ones provided are very close in length.

Went out and bought some teak oil from [a hardware store] after installing, and applied the next day. I would also recommend buying a vinyl deck storage box to put the cushions and pillows in when not in use to prevent fabric from fading. We got a Suncast one from Target that is a 99 gallon size [...] and it fit all the cushions and pillows from both loveseats and both chairs.

We are very excited to have company over and show off this beautiful set, which is a GREAT price considering it's Smith and Hawken brand.

As long as you are careful when putting the bolts in, get a deck storage box for the cushions and pillows, and seal it with teak oil, I think you will be very happy.

I recommend this set 100% and give it 5 stars.

Nice Quality June 15, 2008 Reviewer:  Mark A. Adams Real Name See all my reviews >

I purchased this in-store to replace my umbrella which was just busted up in a big storm. This is heavier and better quality than my previous umbrella (which was aluminum). My only issue is that the pole is thicker than my previous umbrella pole, and thus I need to buy a new stand. However, this is actually a good thing...meaning it's more solid. The pulley mechanism is easy to operate, but you need to be about 5'10" or standing on a step/chair to insert and remove the pin. All-in-all, very happy with this item.

Nice and sturdy June 5, 2008 Reviewer:  Lola Bean See all my reviews >

I bought this from the store, so I knew that it did not have the crank and tilt option--it didn't even mention that it did in the store. I got it on sale. It is kind of heavy to open, but I'm 5'1 and can do it without much problem, so it can't be that bad. It's nice looking and very functional for my small, hot back porch. I like it and haven't had any problems with rusting, molding, or any other issues. I suggest buying in the store, I guess, since I didn't have any problems.
