Although he launched his career as Gavin DeGraw's older brother, Joey DeGraw proves to be a competent songwriter in his own right with Say Something Strong, the musician's second solo release. Joey's material is gruffer, grungier, and more rootsy than his sibling's output, even if both musicians share an affinity for commercial pop and soulful, Catskills-inspired rock. On tracks like "Sister Mystery" and "Our Own Time," DeGraw aims for the same anthemic catharsis that made hits out of "Chariot" and "I Don't Wanna Be;" elsewhere, he sticks with straightforward, bar band rock roll.
