I purchased the 5 shelf and 3 shelf bookcases over a year ago. I found them easy to assemble but found it a little easier to have an extra set of hands. I have had other ready to assemble furniture but these are sturdier that those other pieces. I also find the details on them make them appear as a more expensive piece of furniture. I have moved them a couple of times and they have stayed together without needing any repair. They are sturdy and found them steady on carpet of tile floor. I am getting ready to purchase another set in Ebony this time. see less

The instructions were good, but the best part is that the parts were bundled and labeled for each step of the assembly, and they gave extra parts. It looks great. I put this together by myself the other morning.The bookcase is sturdy and well made, labeled very clearly, and the hardware was arranged in small packets according to direction's steps. Take your time. The only beef I had was with the locking pin and lock devices. You drop a circular lock into a hole and its corresponding bolt is tapped into its hole. HOwever, sometimes they dont jibe, because the lock's holes are drilled too deeply. I would highly recommend after step three to tap in the bolt, put the pieces in contact, and THEN insert the locking hoobyjiggy thingamabob. This way, you can turn it and make it surround the bolt instead of blindly trying to put the bolt into the lock. Other than that, it's great. Enjoy see less

I bought 2 of these and the TV stand with glass doors. I put a bookcase on each side of the TV stand and it makes my family room look so good. I bought the black my husband put all 3 pieces together in a couple hours. and he love it all. Great prices. I understand when people say so many screws but if you want it to stay together thats what you need. Also an electric screw gun doesnt hurt see less

The directions were clear and it took about a half an hour for me to put it together. It was packed well, so no damage. It was a cheap piece of furniture, so I think it is about worth what was paid. I wasn't looking for a shelf to last through time, just through childhood. I didn't expect hardwood. It is sturdy enough to hold books. Its biggest fault? On the carpet, it doesn't stand flat once books are loaded. It kinda sways forward so there is a bigger gap on the top then the bottom near the wall. I put a wall anchor in. Comes with one. and I feel better about it, but it still leans forward. I think my next step would be to put a little wedge of wood under the front of it. I dunno. I think if given the chance to repurchase, I would spend a little more to get a more stable one. see less

I am not mechanically inclined at all and I put this together in about an hour as my husband and kids slept. You do not need any outside tools and the parts are grouped together and labeled according to each step. Grips for the ends are highly recommended....surprised that they are not included. For a DYI project I say its fairly easy for 1 person to accomplish. The instructions...HA! You have to follow the rudimentary line drawings. Just make sure you set the proper length of wooden dpwls in the proper holes which was the biggest pain. It was not very descriptive regarding this step and could leave you taking it apart to remedy this. One assembled, it looks very nice and sturdy. It would be a tremendous relief of concern if you do anchor it to the wall with the hardware I did find included - Even if you do not have off-spring running around. see less

It was fairly easy to assemble, and it was light enough that I assembled it downstairs and then carried it upstairs all by myself. This is exactly as pictured! It is the perfect piece of furniture for m daughter's room, for her books and knick knacks. I bought many of the Avington pieces and they all match perfectly! My delivery came in the rain and had been sitting for hours in the rain, but everything was packed really nicely and with all the styrofoam, everything inside was dry! I've had experience assembling furniture like this, so I did not need the instructions, but overall, you don't need anything more than a Phillips head screwdriver...everything else came in the box. The pieces are real wood, except if a piece has a back piece, which is that MDF, but it is not too flimsy...as a matter of fact, once it's screwed on, it is very durable and really helps to hold everything together. I am very happy with my purchases! see less

The finish looks like it would chip easily, but I enjoy a "shabby chic" look so I'm not worried. The baskets are high quality and sturdy and fit nicely into the shelves. I only had a small problem with the shelf wobbling- one leg was a tad short- but I stuck a felt piece to the bottom of the leg and it's perfect now. I already wrote a review on this but somehow it doesn't show to me. I love this shelf. It's heavy and durable. I actually enjoyed assembling it, too, with the way all the hardware was organized in little sections by steps. It's a great book shelf but I use it mostly for decor - in the living room it just filled up a stupid empty corner where nothing else would go. Highly recommend. By the way, my packaging was perfect and nothing was damaged. see less

I was a bit hesitant once I saw one star of a previous review but after I read it I realized I need to still buy one and rehabilitate its reputation. My package wasn't damaged and it was really heavy, which is good, because a piece of furniture like that, you want it stable and reliable. I enjoyed assembling it, too, because everything was such a good quality and all the hardware was packed in sections for part 1, 2 and so on of assembly. We had a corner in our living room that asked for something and this shelf just clicked in there. So ready to put some decor and books in it and it's ready to roll. I also appreciate that it has legs, because it's easier to run the wires behind it. It had a little scratch - paint off - on the top trim, but I decided it's not worth the hassle of return, nothing a little black sharpie couldn't fix. see less

not too happy with receiving the product. After taking the pieces of the shelf out of the badly damaged box, I was surprised to see only 1 piece broken. I could have dealt with it if it was a crack in a shelf but it was the entire side/support. The corner was busted off and it had atleast 3 cracks in the middle of the wood. Received this bookcase today and on the day they said it would be delivered. When I opened it everything was tightly packed but the instructions were missing. Target was able to give me the manufactures info and the manufacture e-mailed me the directions right away. Took me 10 minutes tops to put this together. Overall a solid bookcase not very fancy but for the money a solid buy. Also does not sway back and forth like some cheap tall bookcases which is nice. see less

The correct dimensions are (measured myself after assembly): ~29"Hx~13.5"Wx~11"DThis package arrived quickly and in good shape. [...] I only bought this shelf (with the rattan baskets) versus the cheaper identical yet non-basketed shelf [...]The shelf came with all parts required to assemble it - including a hex wrench; no screwdriver or hammer was required, though I did use my hammer to tap in the wood plugs at the end. No parts of the shelf assembly were damaged, and the wood is deeply and well-stained, if a little grainy in parts. It looks much more expensive than it was, and fits in well with my modern/mission decor. The colors are true to the picture shown online. Assembly took me approximately 15-20 minutes on my own, free of frustration, and resulted in a very pretty, very sturdy shelf perfect for my needs - a book shelf next to a desk that will have things sitting on top of and within it. The rattan baskets are nice plus, though I'm not sure I'll use them every day - they also seem well-made. I bought this bookcase to fill an empty corner in my bedroom that needed some nicer organization. I assembled it in about a half hour and I am very impressed with the overall look... appears much more expensive than it actually is. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars on quality was there were a few scuffs on two of the shelves, but a little furniture polish helped to diminish them a bit, and the pegs that connect the upper and lower pieces did not want to go in as easily as they probably should have. Also, heads up on the 3 wood screws required to secure the two pieces... one screw goes on the back two pieces and attaches fine, however the screws that go into the side pieces were at a very awkward angle and difficult to screw in - you need a short phillips head or it won't go in... I ended up using a swiss army knife. All in all I'm very happy with the shelf and you can't beat the price. Oh, and shipping was super fast, got here a week earlier than Target quoted!! see less

I love these shelves!! i bought three of them for mu living room. I had a hard time finding something that had an adjustable shelf to accommodate my 12 x12 scrapbooks and these do a beautiful job. I have all my scrapbooks lined up across the bottom and use the other shelf and the top of the bookcase for display stuff. The color is the darker wood but that is what i wanted anyway. i have had these for 4 months and they are fine. they come with an earthquake strap if that is an issue for your area or have a child who may try to pull the bookcase over see less

I agree it is a pain to put together. Two people are needed. However, it is a great shelf once together and ready for use. The cost is a bit high, but it is real wood and not cardboard. We use it in our closet to house electronics and file containers, as well as, books. It would look great anywhere, which is why we will probably order another for our son's room. see less

Just put together the bookcase today and found it to be sturdy and attractive- especially for the price. The cherry color matched the nursery set perfectly. As the previous poster noted- it has a thinner backing, however, it does not take away from the attractiveness of the bookcase and seems more than able to hold the books and toys I have placed on the shelves. Definitely a bargain price for what you're receiving. If you want a sturdier back then you probably should look at a wooden bookcase instead of wood laminate... see less

I took a chance after reading the only 2 reviews about terrible packaging. I thought since they were written awhile ago, maybe there had been improvement. Alas, no impovement has been made in packaging. At least not with the box its shipped in. I purchased 2 of these shelves, each arrived in its own large box. Both were pretty beaten up, but one was completely ripped open, exposing the shelves inside. My regular UPS driver showed it to me, and said he examined it and couldn't see any damage, neither could I. He made a note of it, but I get UPS shipments from all over the country on a regular basis, and have never had an issue with damaged goods, so I highly doubt it was due to improper handling on UPS's part. The shelves inside were saved from the damage done to the boxes, but had their own little marks. Some looked to be slightly cracked, but nothing that looks to compromise the integrity of the structure. They are nice overall, exactly what I was looking for, but they are way overpriced. Other ladder-type shelves like these are priced much lower, but I was specifically looking for a white finish. It isn't noted that these come with brackets that attach to the very top and are supposed to be anchored to the wall. I didn't anchor them, mainly due to the fact I don't want to damage my plaster walls, but I am not putting much weight on these, and they seem sturdy without being anchored. Arrived in good shape and took a few hours to put together. Once assembled it looks really good and is sturdy. It is probably a bit larger than I really needed but it looks nice and I am getting the other pieces of the collection to finish off my bedroom. The color is not really white, it is definitely off-white or cream colored but the antiquing looks pretty good for RTA furniture. This thing holds A LOT of stuff, mine is mostly folded up T-shirts, but there are a ton of them and it still has room for more. I have the dresser and a bookcase on the way. Although assembling this cabinet required the services of a handyman, it was well worth it. Decently made and attractive, it hasvfour shelves and enough interior space to serve as a kitchen pantry. I was very hesitant to purchase this, especially after I ordered a shelf similar in price and style and it was AWFUL, but I am SO glad I did! It is great quality and all of the screws and parts fit perfectly. I'll admit that the directions weren't very clear to me at first but the more I read over it, the quicker I understood. My ordered arrived in less than a week and my husband and I put all 4 together last night. I was looking for shelves in my craft room and one in my daughter's room. Construction is as good as can be expected for the price. Color is beautiful and assembled rather quickly. Do follow the directions as I made a mistake and had to re-assemble a couple of things to make sure the screws were a good fit. They look great and totally fit what I was looking for! My shelving arrived promptly. Lots of packing kept the wood well-protected. The assembly is laughably easy - just push the sides out and the shelves drop into place. If you must have greater stability, hardware for attaching to the wall comes with it. Holds LOTS of books, which was my main reason for inexpensive shelving that would look nice in the living room. Just remember, as with any freestanding shelves, to distribute the weight correctly. Don't want kids or pets to jump on things and knock them over. That's why they send the hardware. Since I don't have those worries, my shelves are doing fine. Some on carpetting, others on plain floors. Works well either way. see less

As I had read the other reviews for the matching 4-shelf one, I knew to expect more of a cherry color than walnut - which is great for me! Matches my desk beautifully! I was looking for something to use to put my printer and humidifier other things in some vertical storage so save space in a small room. No additional tools are needed to assembly this and it is easy to assemble. Since the outer shelf edges aren't flush with the edges of the posts, I recommend having something wedge-like or with varying degrees of thickness to prop up the self during assembly. Yes, the quality may not be as good, but let's face it, folks, we are paying for the look and not for the quality. After all, how many people who are buying furniture from Target expect to pass something like this on to their children? It's a fine bookcase and is actually much more substantial than it looks in the photo. It's not impossible to assemble, but not easy, either, and I can't understand why Target doesn't study [...] and make their products that easy to assemble. Perhaps that would add to the cost. I love this book case! It is sturdy and sleek looking and I have already received so many compliments on it and people asking me where I got it. I was able to put it together by myself in probably about 30-45 minutes. The instructions are easy and there's not a whole lot too it. The only downfall is that I wish it was real wood instead of particle board or at least painted instead of a laminate finish. But unless your up close inspecting it you can't really tell! see less

This is one of the hardest things I've ever put together! I thought I could do it myself, but definitely needed my husband to lend a hand to help hold everything together. The instructions are pretty basic, but implenting them was harder than expected. However, once it was actually together, I absolutely loved it. The wood isn't that cheap particle board that you get a lot with more inexpensive furniture. I decided to use it as a bedside table since we have a king-sized bed and needed something taller than a standard nightstand plus extra storage, and it looks great. I actually received it for Christmas and ordered another one today so I'll have a set for our room. Love this piece, but make sure you have help to assemble it! see less

This shelf looks very nice in my home and is the perfect size for the space that I needed to fill......however, the baskets arrived FILTHY and I had to spend time cleaning them up. Also, I agree with other reviewers who say this piece is difficult to assemble. You definitely need someone there to give you an extra pair of hands. Finally, I feel while this is a nice piece of furniture, it's overpriced for the size and the difficult assembly process. I think about [$] would be a more appropriate price, not [$]. Bought this for an executive conference room. I was nervous about buying this type of furniture for this room. The current furniture is fairly high quality. This bookcase looks GREAT. The color matches perfect. It does not look cheap. The only complaint I have is that when you put the back board on, you need to make it go to the top. There are no holes in the wood, but you need to follow the holes in the middle. This was probably my fault, but if I can read past it, anyone can. see less

First of all, it's extremely easy to put together: unlike most retail stort furniture, it comes almost completely assembled. I ordered two shelves with a little trepidation, as some of the reviews cited pre-drilled holes that did not meet and difficulty with construction. We did not find that at all. The shelves fit together easily and everything was aligned. We did need a rubber mallet to put the top and bottoms of the supports together. I own 2 of the ladder shelves and 2 of the corner shelves. I've had them for about 2 years and they're still holding up fine. They do scrath easily, and are very frustrating to put together (easy to asemble, but time consuming). Also, the brackets that connect he lower part of the shelf with the upper part don't hold very well (short screws, and pre-drilled holes were too big). Overall though, they're good shelves and match my bedroom set very well. When I move I'll be buying them again. see less

The pre-drilled holes for the screws were not drilled in the right places and putting holes in the correct place cracked the wood.
