I think it is the greatest.I just purchased one and just plugged it in.I was quickly able to transfer all my videos over from my PC.This unit saved me from using up all the space on my computer.A friend told me about it.I also love the easy and fast data transfer.I highly recommend this unit!
This is a great little drive -- literally plug it in to any available 2.0 or 3.0 USB port and start copying files to it. Take note - this drive ,as advertised, is for extra storage, it comes with no back up software - if that's what you are looking for then by Seagates back up drive. You can use Windows backup with it. But this drive is intended for super easy plug and play storage. I have it plugged into a Netgear router USB share port. It showed up instantly on my network ,win8 OS on both machines,. File transfer at USB 2.0, I copied 28 GB of files to it and it took roughly 1 hour.
In summary I would recommend this drive to anyone using a laptop -or- as a super easy alternative to opening your desktop to install another drive for more storage space.
WD smartware and other software stinks. It has had in past issues with Windows 7. When I first got this, the USB drive would go to sleep then disappear from being accessable even on reboot. Only a power cycle of the drive itself would resolve this.
After reading the internetz for solution, formatted drive as straight NTFS in windows 7. And uninstalled WD software.
Drive has been working over a year now. Almost full and looking to buy another one. Works great. This drive has been accessed, read/write every day at least 10 times a day without fail since that format procedure within first week of buying.
Giving 4 stars because of the format issue you should start with.
Would not recommend installing the software - WD SmartWare - that comes with the device. The initial one I purchased has already been replaced by WD under warranty - easy process. The second one, I eventually uninstalled the WD SmartWare from my Mac and used the Disk Utility to create a partition on the device. [...]
I got this drive in the evening, took it home, unpackaged it, plugged it into my windows 7 64 bit lenovo t420 laptop, installed all the wd software, updated the firmware and the software, restarted, proceeded to copy files and it would randomly get stuck on files and say there was a problem copying the file and was related to an i/o error. Tried a different usb port, same thing, reformatted the drive with the provided software and switched ports again, same thing. I took at back the very next day and got my money back.
