I first purchased this shelf about 5 years or so ago when I moved into my first apartment. I recently bought a house, and I was happy to find that Sterilite still makes the exact same shelves! The new shelves were completely compatible with the old model, which definitely withstood the test of time. My basement is a bit short, so I can only stack 4 out of the 5 shelves it comes with, but given that it's compatible, I have been able to make a bonus shelf with the leftover pieces from each set. The item is useful. The directions are bad. Watch for the line inside the part. Place the line on the part so that it will fit the line on the bar. The parts have a wide part, and a narrow part which is barely visible. The shelve has a wide hole, and the bottom of that hole is narrow. Place the narrow part of the sleeve into the wide part of the shelf otherwise the shelf will slip. The chrome system was milled badly, and had to be returned for the black item which was simple to put together once the line fitted into the groove, and the narrow part slipped through the wide part on the shelf. You can buy almost identical units at other stores, but not for the same price. This really is the best buy. Very sturdy. The feet unscrew to change levels so you may balance the units on uneven flooring. Easy to assemble and take apart if moving. All you need is a rubber mallet to disassemble. Shelves can be placed at any level, great for customizing shelves for different size boxes. They hold a lot of weight. I have had these 2 years in the garage/studio. No chipping or rusting. I'm not sure what went wrong with the other reviewers, but these units are great, easy to assemble, and capable of holding 70 lbs PER shelf! If you over think and not trust the plastic clips to work, then you will have a hard time, but all you have to do is follow the directions. It's that simple! I bought two of these units to use as bookcases-and I have A LOT of books, including magazines, which are heavy. I liked the first two so much, I went back and got a third to get even more organized-my printer and files, etc. I am now purchasing two more to organize my clothes. I highly recommend. They have the capacity to hold A LOT of stuff and don't take up much room. see less

I am not sure about weight limit per shelf, but it says total weigh max is 350lbs on the box. It is very sturdy if assembled correctly and has adjustable feet on the bottom to make sure it is level. I fit 2 small totes per shelf on 3 of the shelves of this rack. I am about to order another one of these because I like it so much and my store is out of stock. I got 2 of these shoe racks from local Target store, since it was out of stock online and in most stores too.I am glad I picked the last two available in my store.It has now cleared the shoe clutter and its really easy to setup right out of the box.I stacked the two top of each other and saved some space in my closet.I just wrapped the velcro from the top of the bottom shelf to the bottom of the upper shelf and I have now one tall shelf and its stable.I did put my heavier shoes in the bottom rack.I wear a size 9.5 and all shoes comfortably fit into the slots.The quality is amazing and is stable.Really good value for the $ paid. see less

These racks are just really top notch! I bought a couple of different sizes yesterday on sale for storage in the closet under my stairs. One was too big even though I measured, but I had grabbed the wrong one. That's ok! My husband loved it so much he kept it for the garage and we went back for another one of that size when we went to replace it today. We bought the caster wheels for all but one of them and it makes them so easy to move around. They are sturdy, super easy to assemble, and even without the caster wheels are still easy to move. I don't want to put everything in seperate baskets or bins and the shelves are wire, so I will probably put some of the heavy drawer liner on them so I don't have issues with some of the items I want to store on it, but other than that I really have no complaints. They come in several different convenient sizes. I wish I had more places to use them! see less

I read a couple of poor reviews and all I can think is that those consumers didn't look at the incredibly easy instructions. Sounds like they installed the shelf stays improperly. They are marked "TOP" for a reason as they are tapered slightly and go on one way, and should rest in a pole groove. The shelf then slides over the pole and stay and compresses the stay for a solid fit. Be sure the stays are athe same height by counting the grooves in the poles. These shelves are not at all flimsy, and only the most incompetent could bungle their assembly. I have 70 heavy antique [...] style lanterns on my set and it's rock solid. see less

Unless you spend a lot of money at a hardware store, it's hard to find a wire shelving unit in this generous size. This was just the right size for my storage room. My large plastic storage bins fit easily. It's sturdy, and you can customize the height of each shelf. The only drawback, as mentioned by another reviewer, is that the plastic clips break easily. I broke one, but fortunately an extra was included in the box. No doubt this is a common problem. Just be careful with those clips during assembly! see less

It is the simple things that trip us up. These shelves are easy if you read the directions which are quite clear. Something to pay attention to is the black clips that snap together easily and stay on the legs. They MUST be moved up and down to settle into the groove you want which thereafter they will snap together. The name "UP" is clearly raised lettering on the side of the black clip. Clear directions that say "UP" are in the directions included with the product. The instructions clearly tell you how many grooves you must count so the shelves are even across the legs from each other. When all else fails... Read the directions see less

One sits right next to my desk, with the top shelf holding a Printer/scanner, middle shelf holding a full size Home Theater receiver, and the bottom shelf adjusted to hold my computer tower. This is a great value for what you get. I've owned this shelf for over six years and now I'm back for another. It has been with me through four moves and it's as strong as day one. It's light and sturdy enough to move (empty) by yourself. Lay it on it's side and the shelves won't budge. The shelves are held up by rubber o-rings that can be slid up and down the supports. There's a pocket of sorts on the corner of the shelves that sit atop the rings in a way that makes the shelf sturdier when more weight is on the shelf. The only drawback to this design is the shelf height is easier to adjust on other designs, but who really messes around with a storage shelf much? When assembling, just remember to put bottom o-rings on first, then bottom shelf, then next level o-rings, then next level shelf and so on. No tools needed but a plastic or rubber mallet may come in handy if you want to adjust shelf height. This thing is versatile and sturdy. I don't like giving top rating for things because I feel there is usually room for improvement. I would give it a 4.5. Make it feather light, adjustable in 30 seconds, a bit smaller grating (not good for folded clothes and some things might fall through), all for the same price and I'll give it a 5! see less

Each shelf and each leg are independent. The leveling marks are just over 1" apart. You just set the front two legs one level higher than the back legs. I know it sounds weird, but we did it on thick shag carpet and had a large tv on the middle shelf with books above and below. We did have the TV and lower books below the middle to be safe. (lower center of gravity.) the TV shelf was anchored to the wall with a nylon strap and a nail in a stud. But we did it with two others that just had clothing, books, little plastic drawers of odds and ends, and never had a bit of trouble. They weren't quite level, but they were stable enough for us. see less

I dont know if it was over painted or if the plastic pieces were not made correctly. HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! Nice shelf if it was made correctly. Box states 350 pounds per shelf evenly distributed... I cant trust this one to put a pound on any of the shelves without slippage!!! see less
