We have made several of these kits/books over a period of 5 years. The kits are easy to use, and the finished books hold up well. The new kits allow you to do much of the work online via the company's website. You can use their stamps to create the pictures, or import your own art or photos (depending on which kit you buy). The turnaround time is considerably less when you use the internet publishing option, but wasn't bad even going the old fashioned "snail mail" way. I would suggest this kit for a 7 year old at the youngest, unless you have very little hope of it being a real story. My child has made three different stories featuring characters she created using her toys as inspiration. They are adorable stories, and are among her most treasured items, even five years later. A few tips: Do not fix the spelling and grammar "errors" in your child's stories as they become very special reminders of your child's development. Also, be sure to fill out the "About the Author" page with lots of details about your child's likes and dislikes. It makes the books feel like little time capsules when you look back at them in the future.

We ordered this kit for our kids last year for Christmas without knowing much about it. Were we ever pleasantly surpised! It is the greatest! It really made the kids use their imagination to write a story and draw pictures to go along with it. Then we mailed the pages in (in the paid envelope that comes in the kit--excellent idea!). When the books arrived, the kids were so excited and SO proud! We had to order extra copies because they wanted to give one to their teachers (for the library) and to their Grandparents. We will definitely be ordering more of these kits. And they would be great for birthdays or other gift giving occasions. A five star reommendation!!

This was probably the best gift that I have ever purchased for a child (my nephew, age 7). The book was simple to create and my nephew was 100% involved in the project. I used the "mail-in" option. The book arrived in exactly four (4) weeks. The finished product was very impressive. I have never seen my nephew so excited. He has shared it with family, classmates and his school librarian. He was especially proud of the "About the Author" section. I plan to make "Illustory" a tradition that my nephew and I will share.

We decided to collaborate as a family and write a book together. It took a while to find a kit at a local Target. I had to drive 40 miles to find one. We were planning to meet our family in Puerto Rico in two weeks and intended to give my mother-in-law the book that had been dedicated to her. We were in a time crunch! I emailed customer service, explained how tight we were on time, and in no time...we had our books! We plan on writing another book this Christmas! It was so much fun to see the final product!

I decided to buy this for one of my son's to give as a gift to my parents. He really enjoyed drawing and coloring the pictures. Once he was finished, we mailed it off. When we received it back, I was extremely satisfied with the book. My parents treasure this gift. They want their other grandkids to do one. I believe it's very fun, educational and a great item...and great for a gift or whatever. I highly recommend it!

My 6 and 8 year old children decided that my daughter would be the illustrator and my son the author, they loved it! The process of writting the book was fun. The story planner page was helpful for them to organize their ideas. The final product was much better quality that I imagined and we plan to give it to their grandfather as a gift as it was dedicated to him. Educational and great family fun! We tried the on-line option but preferred the old fashioned marker and paper option.

I gave this as a gift for one of my niece's for her birthday and she absolutly loved it. She is having so much fun writing and drawing her story. Now I am sending one to her sister for her birthday cause that's all she wants.
