Worst set of shelving ever

As stated in some of the previous reviews, this is not good shelving. In fact I would say that it's the worst that I've ever purchased. Wished I had read the reviews ahead of time. I purchased 2 sets of these a few weeks back when they were on sale at Target. Flimsy metal bends easily and poor construction as far as putting it together yourself. Every time I tried to add another piece, especially when trying to stack them, previous sections kept coming apart. Well, one set will be going back to Target. The other, now bent up set, is in the garbage can. Don't waste your money buying these.

Very wobbly, and sharp edges on the edges of the shelves. I cut myself bad enough to require stitches on the underside of the shelf. I don't recommend.

· Exceptionally wobbly.
· Held together by gravity and the weight of the shelves and the items placed on the shelves. I need to reinforce with sheet metal screws.
· Must be assembled exactly where you will use it. Cant even it an inch or it will collapse.
· Made of rolled sheet metal with sharp edges. Material bends easily.
· Assembly requires finesse and patience, can be done by one person, an assistant is helpful though.
· I don’t think this product should carry the Target name—its not what you think and its not what it looks like on the postage stamp image on the web page.

Bought several of these in 2003, and they've held up well, heavily loaded with fairly inactive storage. Most of the negative comments here are correct, but are avoidable.
Pieces fit together with tabs and slots-make sure the tab not only goes into the slot but then out the bottom. Much more secure that way. Use a rubber mallet to pound them through tightly (rubber works better and is easier on the unit than a metal hammer, but you can cushion any hammer). Mallet was NOT needed to insert shelves -- mine laid in easily.
But don't pick by a shelf support or upper half of the posts to move the unit, it will of course come apart. Having to get all tabs started more or less simultaneously does make assembly kind of awkward, at least the first few. A helper or using a wall or other prop may help. By the second unit, I had it down to a system.
Post bottoms are unfinished sharp edges, so sliding this is almost impossible, and scratches the floor, even unloaded. Consider assembling it on blocks of 1" stock, or on a sheet of thin plywood.
Because there are no screws and no triangles in its design, unit is borderline flimsy (including torsional flex) -- so don't let small children climb on it, keep the center of gravity low (heaviest stuff on bottom), and don't load past its specified limits. If you've got some screws and strong wire or rods, you can easily beef up the structure (triangular "guy-wire" bracing, or whatever), but that's "cheating," isn't it?
Moisture will damage any wood material - paint, raise or cover it if there's concern. If this is exactly the same product as what I bought, posts are two-part, so there is an alternative configuration, letting you create 2 half-height units side by side.
I paid [less] per unit in late 2003 (possibly on sale), a good value that has met my needs. Don't know what heavier duty units cost now, but considering all this, at [the price] for this one I'd look for a similar unit that uses screws.

I put two sets of these today for organizing my garage. If nobody breathes too deeply in my garage, they may actually stay up.
You really need a second person to help get them started. And then again when you are adding the second set of vertical brackets. What a nightmare.
Also, you need to set them up where you are going to position the piece because you can't move it once it's started or it starts falling apart.
I didn't get any end caps with either set as mentioned by a previous reviewer.
And finally, don't do what the manufacturer suggests and use a rubber mallet to make sure the plywood shelves are set in place. The plywood just breaks apart when you tap it.

I just purchased a second unit. I went together easily. I did not have any problems with assembly and did not receive any cuts while assembling it bare handed.

My husband wanted the plastic shelves but this was larger for the same price so I talked him into it....big mistake. The metal is so thin you can bend it by hand and is sharp enough to cause serious injury. After my husband (a very handy guy) spent 30 min trying to set up the bottom shelf he wanted to give up. I talked him into at leat putting a few more shelves together. We put three of the shelves together and the whole thing was twisting and coming apart. It says it will hold 900lbs yet bent in half when my husband (all 150lbs of him) leaned on it. We cannot believe Target even carries something this poorly designed.

This five shelf bookcase by Rubbermaid has solved all my garage problems and they were many! Everything is now organized and it took me about 1/2 hour to put up three of them. I have just ordered more. They are truly the best thing I've seen to come into the market this year. What a great price too. You will love them as I do.

Shelf fell apart after one week of use. Cut myself putting it together. Cheap design. Waste of my time and money.

Let me join the chorus of people who said they wished they'd read the reviews before purchasing these shelves, because they are the worst, undoubtably conceived of by an agent of [....]. (I kid, but only slightly.) I have put together more than my fair share of shelves in my day, and never has it taken me so long to construct anything like these shelves. The metal was sharp, and thin enough to bend and move at the tiniest provocation. (I should apologize to my neighbors for the amount of swearing that took place in the 2-plus hours it took me to construct these shelves solo.) Many a time did I find myself cowering in fear as pieces of metal crashed around me. And yes, I managed to damage one of the particleboard partitions even before I finished building the daggone thing. Good times.
Again, let me echo everyone else by saying that this is not something that you can construct in one place and then move to another; the tiniest bump will deconstruct this thing in moments. For that reason, I would not recommend this item for anyone who has pets, small children or sensitivity to pain, as these shelves will undoubtably cause you much suffering.
