I have owed about 4 of these oyster food steamers. I love how they prepare food; and I've used mine probably more than once per day for rice, vegetables, chicken breasts, reheating foods quickly. I've owned so many because the prior ones broke: would not turn on (wondered if water got inside the base when cleaning it?), the timer turn knob stopped working (since then the model has switched to an electronic version), the electronic dial would not light up, and now with my current model which I've owed for less than 6 months, it has a slow leak from the base. Another problem is removing the baskets without dripping all over the place; I'v tried placing the basket in the lid (placed upside down), but the lid has holes in it too so there's still the drippiness.
Despite the problems, I've relied and enjoyed the food that comes out of this steamer and like the idea that more nutrients are retained in steaming foods compared to boiling them, and so I keep going back for another one as I love how well it prepares food. But now that I read others' reviews of a Black and Decker model lasting them 8 or 10 years, I'm going to try switching brands as I go out to purchase a new steamer today. I've also read about a lid that can be used for serving, so I think that could solve the drippiness problem.

I am not happy with this steamer November 27, 2007 Reviewer:  Jennifer See all my reviews >

After hearing my mother rave about hers (the model with the turn knob) I went out and bought this one. I steamed salmon and some rice. It took forver, never got hot enough.. and I ended up with food poisoning. I will be returning it and going with the Black and Decker model.

The trays are awkward, its a pain to set up and the rice bowel is a joke, nothing cooks right in it.

Great toy for busy mom January 22, 2007 Reviewer:  Deb (Forest, VA United States)  See all my reviews >

I am a busy working mom and this allows me to do so much in the kitchen without the need to stand over the stove! I do all of my rice dishes, fish (try salmon in it!), and chicken. I put FROZEN chicken (the flash frozen from the bag in the freezer section) in with a little seasoning....and it is done in no time! BUY BUY BUY

Toxic!!! December 22, 2008 Reviewer:  Jenn F (Humboldt, CA USA)  See all my reviews >

After receiving this steamer I found out that the plastic used is not BPA free. Since I became pregnant, I have not felt comfortable using this steamer. It's not healthy to be cooking in plastic.

Short Life Span August 27, 2008 Reviewer:  Strawberry (Dallas, TX, USA)  See all my reviews >

We had this as our wedding gift in 2006. We used it more frequently since our daughter was born in 2007. The life span of this product must be short, because we realise it stopped working a couple of days ago. Having said that, this food steamer has done a good job in the many times we used it. I think I am moving on to another brand which has longer life span, which will cost slightly more, but I am assured that it will not 'die' on me when I need it.

Most-used item in my kitchen July 13, 2008 Reviewer:  Army Wife "Vicki B" (Fort Hood, TX)  See all my reviews >

I've had this steamer for three years now and it has served me faithfully. It does an excellent job of steaming veggies perfectly. I fully credit this steamer for the loss of twenty unwanted pounds as it made adding vegetables to a meal nigh-effortless. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is that the base is a pain to clean out without drowning the electronics.

#7 plastic PBA free for steaming Baby food? August 6, 2009 Reviewer:  mom2 2Boys (San Jose, CA, USA)  See all my reviews >

Made of #7 polycarbonate plastic that leeches PBA especially high temperatures.I would not feed estrogen to a baby. I was using this for years. This was my third Oster steamer actually. I was using this to steam ogranic veggies for baby food and now I'm very disappointed.

Love, love this product! May 22, 2009 Reviewer:  tracey3577 (Avilla, IN)  See all my reviews >

I have had mine for over 5 yrs and I love this product. I steam all of my veggies in it. Very easy to clean, throw most of it in the dishwasher and your done. This product makes people think you are a professional because you can't do it wrong. Worth the price ten times over!

And I don't even like to cook... May 9, 2009 Reviewer:  Native Coastal Mom (Coastal SC)  See all my reviews >

This is the best...really. Loved steamed veggies and rice..this is the best way to do it all at once, even gave several for gifts. Easy to use, clean. We get a lot of use from this in the summer with fresh veggies. Really no way to go wrong with this to avoid all of the fried foods.

great steamer! September 12, 2009 Reviewer:  Cathy (RI, USA)  See all my reviews >

I bought one quite some time ago and I love it. I have also purchased several as gifts for friends who want one as soon as they see it in use and taste food made in it. It's so easy to use and clean. Vegetables, fish and even chicken all steam perfectly!!
