Pleased Overall, After Modifications

I ordered two of these shelves, along with the table top to use as my art table for my makeshift art studio at home. When we went to put the shelves together, they were easy and pretty solid pieces - all except for the backing. Each shelf came with 3 separate pieces for backing that were very flimsy and had stress fractures all over. For each kit, 1 of the 3 backing pieces were cut too small and would have left a gap of about 3 inches. I wound up modifying mine to solve the issue, leaving the backing off from the top part of the shelves. This actually worked out great, as it now allows me to store items on those shelves that would not have fit before. Also, I think it adds to the look of the desk. Overall, I am pleased, but want to warn those future buyers about the backing. Be prepared to improvise the look of your shelves!

Wobbly and Magazines Don't Fit

First, for weighing in at 92 shipping pounds, the whole bookcase is not very sturdy once assembled. Second, the FIXED shelves are literally 1/8" too short for major mainstream architectural magazines to stand straight up and down including Architectural Record, Architect, and Architectural Digest. The only way I will be able to fix the problem is to take the two shelves down to a cabinet shop and have them milled down to approx. 5/8" thick (vs. the current 1" thickness). PS..each opening is a slightly different height. SO, don't buy this bookcase unless you can live with a net clearance of 10-5/8" (bottom) 10-7/8" (middle) or 10-3/4" (top) net opening between shelves.

Good For Scrapbook Supplies

I gave this bookcase 4 stars. I bought two as well as the top to make a "craft center". Works well for storage of 12 X 12 scrapbooking supplies however the six openings are not 12 inches high so you have to store your paper on the side. It was fairly easy to assemble but my husband had to do some minor modifications because holes to screw together did not match up. Also, there was a few blemishes on the bookcases, but nothing too noticeable. If there would not have been blemishes, I would have given this five stars. Overall well worth the money. Looks good and is very functional for crafts of any kind.

After spending money to ship this there is a defective part. As mentioned in another review (which I should have read!), one of the back slats is not big enough so there is a 3 inch hole behind one of the sections- which looks terrible obviously.

Easy to assemble, nothing fancy about it - serves it purpose and fits nicely - good storage. Width is narrower than I thought.

I got this for my son's room. His large and oddly shaped childrens' books fit nicely into the larger than normal spaces. The middle piece was not cut to measure however, and made the whole thing off-kilter. I had to saw it down to fit properly. Great quality heavy wood and very durable. I would highly recommend it for childrens room- books/toys or scrap-booking. Overall a nice buy for the money.

I was hesitant to order this as I don't like having to assemble anything. I'm glad I did. It is beautifully made, easy to put together (included all necessary tools). Each step of items needed were individually packaged so you didn't use the wrong screws. It is a nice heavy piece of furniture, but I was able to put it together myself even though it recommended two people. It really enhanced my scrapbooking room. The free shipping was an added bonus.

The most difficult part of the assembly, for me, was actually unpacking all the pieces. There was so much packing material between these two bookcases and the accompanying table top, I now have a huge 5ft. tall mountain of cardboard and foam wrap in my living room. (Thank goodness recycle pick up is in two days). The peices were wound in both foam wrap and cardboard, and then they were packed in an additional cardboard box.
Once I had unpacked all the parts the assembly was very quick, about 30 minutes for the first bookcase and 15 for the second. The first took a little longer because one of the three back-boards was warped and didn't slide through the grooves easily. There were a few slight scratches on the edges of the shelves that resulted in 4 stars rather than 5; a patch pen should make them much less noticeable.
Hardware packs #1 and #3 were mislabeled for both bookcases, but that was a simple issue to figure out, as the only difference is that one has the hex wrench and the other doesn't. The assembly would have been even quicker if the short part of the hex wrench was just a quarter-inch or so shorter, allowing complete 360-degree turns. Unfortunately, it was too long for that, so I had to make 180-degree turns, removing and re-inserting the wrench for each half turn.
The smooth black color is very nice and blends surprisingly well with the rest of my furniture, which is espresso, not black.
They seem very sturdy, and I think they would have served well as stand-alone bookcases, contrary to another review.
The actual height of each shelf is about 10.5 inches. Note that unlike the more expensive copy sold elsewhere, this component has 6 large shelves vs. 9 medium ones. I believe the larger shelves provide more storage options for larger items; I can always use baskets to further compartmentalize the larger shelf space.
