Unlike the other review that I found for the red Taylor Digital therometer, I use mine to insure the food is stored in a proper cold place ... either the freezer or refrigerator. It's readings are available as C or F readings.
Like the other thermometers that I have used, taking these measurements, this one is VERRRRRY SLOOOOOW dropping from room temperature to the actual cold temperature that I need to know down to the tenth of a degree. It meets my need. I just hate standing in the freezer that long to get the number of temperature samples I need.
I do like something that really helps me. You can find out the coldest (and warmest) temperature the unit has measured since it was turned on. That way, I know it did not change when I walk out of the freezer with it. I do not have to redo the taking of that temperature. It has a hold button, but sometimes I forget to use it, so the Max/min button has come in handy.
It has a calabration feature, so you can make it match a given standard before beginning.
The replacement battery is the same one that my computer motherboard uses. So far, I have not had to replace it, but I have plenty of those batteris on hand.
One thing to be very aware of: The red one only measures the temperature at the end point. Anything touching the middle is not supposed to affect the reading.
One of the Taylor black thermometers with fewer features (available in the Target store) for a lesser price measures the length of the probe. Sometimes that is what I want. If that were the case, the red one would not meet my need.
Target.com has a yellow one for a few dollars more, but based on the picture, I would stick with this red one for the min/max temperature feature.

Can't Handle the Heat

This looked like a reasonable replacement for my preferred CDN digital thermometer that died after 6 years. At first, I was pleased by the back-light allowing for easy reading of the display. But every time I tried to use it during barbecuing, it would turn red, then green and then the display would lock up with none of the buttons able to do anything. Removing the battery would get it to reset, but it would just repeat the same process again. Seems to have something to do with the recalibration function getting initiated by the high heat of the barbecue or just a defective unit. Either way, this thermometer is a disaster and going back to the store today.
