we have 2 labs and 3 cats so you can image the the amount of hair this things picks up. works great, i dont really use or need the attachments that come with this unit. I have used them a once or twice. I the telescoping handle is a good idea or have used it but could live with out it.
Overall this thing really outperforms our Eureka. I plan on having this vaccum for long a time. If you dont have dogs or cats you could probably get buy with a cheaper version.
Would Reccomond

I just purchased this vacuum after our less than 1 year old bagless Bissell stopped working. I decided that instead of messing with cheaper vacuums that don't work, I'd invest in a better one. I had many friends who recommended that I buy a Dyson, but I did not do so without a lot of research. I finally decided to buy the DC17 Animal, and am very happy with this decision. I have berber carpets in my house, and the vacuum did not damage the carpet, but instead cleaned them very well. I also like the mini turbine head. I used this to clean my suede couch and it worked very well at removing dog hair. Everytime I vacuum I put down carpet freshener powder to help freshen the room. I did not use it the first time I vacuumed with this vacuum, but when I looked in the canister, it looked like I had used it, since there was so much left in my carpet from past times that were picked up! I was very impressed and recommend this vacuum to others!

I went thru so many vasuums over the past year. I just wasn't happy with any and none seemed to handle my cleaning chore. My home is fully carpeted and I have 2 very furry persain cats that leave cotton balls everywhere. I also have 3 children who can be messy, not to mention the regular traffic coming thru the house that creates dirt. So I did a ton of research before making a decision. I did not want to spend over two hundred dollars for a vacuum, yet I expected something to actually clean my carpets and last for some years. I had several from Eureka, Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Bissel. So consumer reports rated a Kenmore Progressive at the top of their list, I was not thrilled with the machine when I looked at in-store, plus I also took into consideration reviews from actual owners and not just companies testing the product. One particular review from a gentleman claimed he sought out the same vacuum for the same reason as I and he found that after 2 yrs, the machine died and lacked suction, so he bought a Dyson and was very satisfied. This made me lean towards the Dyson, now which model to really consider was next. Being that I have the cats I knew to stick with the Animal. I compared the DC07, DC14, and DC17. I found that the DC17 Absolute Animal had all the parts and attachments that would be useful to me, plus it had much better ratings the the others. I was really hesitant to spend [so much], that was just way over my budget, but I got lucky and found it on a 3 day sale [...]. When I got it home, it was a piece of cake to assemble, just pop on the attachments and the handle. I picked up so much junk out of my carpet on its first use, the tank was almost full and that was only doing 1 1/2 rooms. I still had the rest of the house to do. Louder than I expected, but not too bad. Even though it's not self-propelled, it sure pulls like it is, very little strength needed to move this baby around and it weighs 20 lbs so I expected a little muscle work, NO way! It is so smooth and easy. Picks up great..period! Has a very long cord so I can do several rooms without unplaugging and finding a new outlet, a 17 foot hose I basically reach the top of my stairts without lugging the machine up with me, the attachments and handle are very easy to use. I gave it four stars becasue I feel for how much money this machine cost, I think the company could have added a self-winding cord instead of maually wrapping it up...and i still feel robbed at that price tag, but I just hope it lasts longer than the 5 year warranty.

Very Noisy, Heavy! Awkward design for using attachments.

This is a very noisy vacuum. I actually think it could damage your hearing, especially when using on non-carpeted floors! Beware! Also, it is VERY HEAVY. While it does pick up lots of animal hair, you must clean the filter frequently for optimum performance. My biggest disappointment with this vacuum, however, is the design of the wand. It is too long and makes cleaning your car, stairs, upholstery etc., very awkward. Dyson should change the design to a telescoping wand so that you can use the attachments with ease and versatility. I have owned my Dyson DC17 for about 2 years. It is used daily. It has been reliable but I was happier with my Kirby, especially because of the noise factor. I would not rebuy this unit and plan to switch to another manufacturer asap. The only positive thing I like is the ease of emptying the bin instead of using expensive bags.

WORST Purchase EVER

I purchased this because we have a one year old lab and two small children in our home. I vacuum the living and family room every day and the other rooms 3 times a week because I don't like pet hair anywhere. It worked great for a couple months, then just when I threw out the box and everything, sure I'd want to keep it, it lost suction completely on the upright portion, leaving me with largest, most expensive dust buster you could buy. I took it to a repairman, and he said it's toast. I am buying something else today. The smaller hand held Dyson is great, but I won't buy one of their uprights again-what a waste. By the way, guarantee is full of strings and they want your firstborn in order for their inept customer service people to do anything in order to assist you.

My husband and I discussed this vacuum for quite a while before we purchased it. I didn't want to spend the money while he pointed out that I've spent a lot of money on cheaper vacuums over the last few years. This vacuum is well worth every penny we spent on it. I didn't think the instructions on putting it together were that clear, they are mostly pictures, but finally figured it out and put the machine to work. I have off-white carpeting, a long haired black cat and a rottweiler that sheds like there's no tomorrow and this vacuum picks up everything! I was amazed at how dirty my carpets were and how many times I had to empty the canister before the carpets were truly clean. This vacuum is worth the investment!

I talked my husband into getting this vacuum a year ago after my cheap Hoover completely stopped working. I have a long haired dog and a cat that just shoots hair everywhere. We also have an almost two year old son who spends a lot of time on the floor. My husband was skeptical, but seeing the vacuum salesman completely clean the cat bed of all the hair convinced him. A year later, the vacuum now gets used every day because our son is absolutely obsessed with it. I have used all of the attachments, I have vacuumed everywhere, including under the bed where the dog sleeps and am still impressed with how amazingly this machine performs. I rave about it to everyone I know! I will never buy another vacuum cleaner again - I don't think I'll need to.

Finally a vaccum that really sucks!

We have and toddler and two long haired big dogs and were in need of a vaccum. There were two requirements, it must move easily from our hardwoods to rugs and be strong enough to get rid of all the dog hair. After looking at reviews and having a friend show hers off, we decided to get a dyson. Upon bringing it home and trying it out, we were amazed to see how much more dog hair and dirt it picked up. As my husband said, "Wow, it really sucks!" We use our dyson daily. Even our dog allergy prone friends have commented on how their allergies have been eased now that we have it. The dyson is a terrific vaccum and is worth the money.

Okay, this vacuum does have more suction than other brands -- but that does me no good since I would NEVER actually use this vacuum! The design is awful, switching attachments is a pain, the 'telescoping wand' does not change lengths (so you can clean things far away from you but nothing up close), and I felt like I'd run a marathon by the time I'd finished vacuuming the house. My husband thought I was just being picky so I let him vacuum. It took 5 minutes before he was packing it up to return to the store. Don't waste your time or your money! wait for the cyclone technology to come out in a vacuum with SOME sense of intelligent ergonomics.

I would buy this vacuum 10 times over. Actually it was a wedding gift, but if I had to buy one, I would. We grew up with Hoover Windtunnels which were fine considering the fact that we never had pets. My husband and I have a dog that sheds a decent amount, tracks some dirt in from the back yard and we have light beige carpet. I have never filled a canister full in just one room until I vacuumed with this! My house feels 10x cleaner and it saves me from having to shampoo the carpet as often becuase it sucks up everything. Worth the money...it's a great investment!
