First of all, thank you for everyone who left a review. I read all reviews before determining if this was the vacuum for my house. And let me tell you, this vacuum is wonderful. I have 1 lab & 2 cats and this picked up every piece of hair. I had a bissell which after 2 years did not pick up anything. I had to actually hand clean the floor myself. Anyways, I have WHITE carpets and this vacuum does a great job! Buy it!

1. Didn't pick up much more than my existing bagless vacuum. However, does pick up.
2. Seems 'cheap' with the thin plastic parts.
3. Hose and hand tools are difficult to use.
4. Let's face it, the colors are hideous.

We have tried many vacuums. The Dyson DC17 seems to be the best for our family.
We have light carpet and did not realize our black greyhound shed so much until we saw all the fur in the canister. The brush roll is very stiff and it does a fantastic job on carpet. The entire vacuum is very well designed and user-friendly. The canister is simple and painless to empty (we don't like to get our hands dirty). We like the convenience of the onboard attachments, and the hose is extremely handy and easy to use. The roller would lightly scratch our wood floors, but we simply push a button to turn just the roller off and it works great on the bare floors. We need to turn the roller off for use on our good area rugs since it is just too strong and we have seen a bit of the colored fuzz in the canister. Without the roller going it really only does an acceptable job on the area rugs.
This vacuum is a bit heavy, but so far we don't mind lugging it around because it really does do an amazing job, and does it in one quick pass.

This vacuum was recommended to us by a relative when we had our new baby. With two shedding dogs, we had to do something about the hair on our floors and were desperate enough to spend the the bigger price. The first time we used it, threads from our new carpet were pulled and quickly unraveled into unsightly bald spots that cannot be repaired. This happened a few more times over the year. We have now had the vacuum for 2 years. It was great during the first year and we bragged it up to everyone we knew. After that, we started having suction problems and found out that the life time filter is a joke. We took it the vacuum repair store, where the tech told us that Dysons are cheaply made, over priced, and have a lot of repair issues. We regret spending the money on a vacuum that will only last us a few years and feel that we've been had! It went from being the best vacuum we've ever had to the worst! I recommend going to a vacuum dealer find a quality product.

The worst pile of junk ever bought in my life! Breaks CONSTANTLY and it's defective to no end. This price is a total rip off. It's a complete scam to charge this much for a freaking vacuum! At [..] this vacuum would still be a complete waste of money. You're better off with buying a reliable known name brand instead. This vacuum is difficult to use, difficult to clean and the customer support is piss poor in comparison to the complete and utter pile of S***! this thing is. Their customer service is just as good as their pile of junk they ripped me off for. I will NEVER buy a dyson ever again and I will let everyone know, write as many articles I can about it and get the word out on cyberspace that this company is terrible and so are their vacuums. Total waste of time and money!!!! Reporting them to better business bureau and making several complaints to anyone I can. This company scams you with overpriced trash heaps and then will not even honor the warranty or help you with their defective pile of S***!.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS VACUUM!!! This is the biggest piece of junk I've ever purchased. My Dyson Animal just broke for the THIRD TIME in 2 years. The brush bar is clogged constantly, and instead of picking up dog hair, it also pulls out our carpet fibers and those get stuck on the brush bar. I have to CLEAN the brush bar pretty much every time I vacuum. It is heavy and clunky, extremely difficult to vacuum the stairs. The clutch (apparently these things have clutches according to Dyson) broke twice, and now it is making some god awful sound when I turn it on. I'm done with this thing. Oh, and the closest place to have it fixed is 45 minutes away from my house. I'm now going to go buy a new vacuum right now - different brand. This is a piece of crap. Wish I could give this zero stars. Can't believe I wasted so much money on such a crappy product.

I received this vacuum as a gift. It worked great for about 5 months, then it started making a terrible noise. I called Dyson and they just sent me a new belt. They were of no help!!! The problem is a design flaw. When the vacuum gets hair and dirt around the gear it causes the clutch to engage (ie., making the terrible noise). I then have to spend an hour cleaning the gear!! This is not want I would expect from very pricey vacuum. I have an active house with a husband, a dog, and a child, that is why this model was given to us. I do not feel it is a quality product. I will never own another Dyson again.

Do not spend your money on this vacuum. it is horrible with pet hair and Doesnt hold suction as it brags. I have had to take it apart three times to clean it out.

We have 4 cats and decided to invest in this vacuum about 2 years ago because my aesthma started to get bad so we invested in the Dyson Animal. This vacuum does work great! Suction is awesome!! Really does pick up all the cat hair and anything else.

The handheld hose part is not very easy to use. Anyone that has one will agree, that its seems heavy, but not too much of annoyance.

The reason for 1 star, we returned our 1st Dyson about 3 months after purchasing it because the power would not stay on, unless I pushed the power button the whole time I was vacuuming. Now just today, the 2nd Dyson just died on me. As soon as I turned it on it immediately turned off. So off to Target to get another, and to return the 2nd one. (NOTE: We vacuum about every week or sometimes every 2 weeks if we are lazy)

If you do get the Dyson Animal I would highly recommend remembering to keep your reciept and to enroll in the 5 year manufacturer warranty. Good Luck!

the vacumn ruined my wool/silk area rugs - seems it is just too powerful...then, customer service is the worst i have ever dealt with!!!! i will never buy dyson again...they refuse to sell me a hepa filter for my dyson...can you believe it??? the hepa filter was ruined (long story) and without it , i have a useless $500 vacumn!!!
