While this is a really good vacuum, there are many others out there that can do the very same or better job for at least half the price. I had two of these and they both cleaned well, however I was not awed by them. I returned one thinking there must be a problem because it isn't doing the awesome job it is supposed to do, you know, above and beyond any other vacuum. The second one proved to me that folks who are so in love with this machine must be so because their old worn out vacuums did such poor jobs. Bissell Healthy home does as good (IMO, Better) at less than half the cost of this one. Most new vacuums will appear to perform umpteen times better than your old one. Just because it does better than your old one, doesn't mean it is spectacular. Again, it is a good vacuum, but at least half of that price tag is for the name, not the performance. And the reviews are to be expected because, again, folks are using it after an old worn out vacuum.

I spent a long time skeptical of Dyson's prices but the universally glowing reviews here and elsewhere won me over, and having now tried a Dyson I'll never use anything else. The DC17 came into my pipe smoky, 5 cat household and cleaned the carpeting beyond any previous conception of clean. I've seen professional wet-vac services not do as well as one pass of a DC17. Even more impressive, it does all this while being no louder that an average vacuum.

I have 3 dogs, (1 German Shepard/Husky mix, 1 Border Collie, and 1 Lab Mix) and 1 cat. I can tell you; my last vacuum DID NOT work well. We have had 3 vacuums in the last 3 years. Nothing has worked so well. I could see the difference in color in the carpet immediately. We would have never placed our 9 month old on bare carpet without a sheet before having this vacuum. Now we place her on the carpet without it and she's NOT covered in dog hair. MAYBE one hair after an hour's play, but that's it. I rarely have to sweep the kitchen, even. This vacuum has made my house feel and smell cleaner and has made my life easier by ten-fold. Bottom line, even if you have one pet, this is the best vacuum cleaner you will ever buy. I am COMPLETELY satisfied and then some with mine. Heck, my husband works with nuclear reactors and this vacuum uses the same filter that his work does! (goodbye allergies!)

I thought it might be helpful to add my review of the dyson vacuum. I bought mine 2 years ago and am still LOVING it! I recommend it to everyone! We have wood floors with area rugs and I can easily go from the rug to the carpet with no hassel at all. We have a huge dog who leaves hair everywhere and I suffer from allergies and asthma. The dyson vacuum really keeps all the dog hair up and keeps the air clean. As a result, I can breathe! It's a litte expensive, but you'll never have to buy another vacuum again!

1) After 2 years of using my Bissel vacuum with brushbar on my berber carpet, I decided to buy a new vacuum really just so I didn’t have to deal with filters

2) I bought the Dyson DC-17 model for pets.

3) After less then two minutes of using their product, it ripped a strip out of the middle of my carpet approximately 20 inches across, in which there were on visible snags for it to catch on, it just ripped up a straight line.

4) After 4 weeks of talking to the people in customer service and sending pictures of the carpet and vacuum, they decided that the vacuum was not defective and therefore would not do ANYTHING to help me fix my carpet. (Talking to does not imply a two-way communication. For the most part, I was required to continually contact them)

5) Apparently, berber carpet falls under what they consider “delicate” carpet and the Dyson manual states that on “delicate” carpet you should not use the brushbar

6) As a means to appease me, however, they are sending the
claim back to liability, but at any time they may request to see the vacuum. If I fail to reproduce this vacuum ( which is most likely the case as I am returning today in order to be covered under the 30 day return limit ), any and all investigation will be dropped.

Further Actions I am taking:

1) Returning the Dyson vacuum
2) Buying a “cheaper” vacuum that is less likely to ruin my carpet and using the money leftover from the return to help finance the repair of the carpet that was ruined by the Dyson vacuum
3) Letting EVERYONE I know that if you buy a Dyson vacuum and it destroys your carpet, as long as that is how the vacuum was designed…they don’t have to help you fix your carpet
4) Hoping that ANYONE YOU know that may be considering a Dyson vacuum will hear these facts before they make a purchase (eg: feel free to forward this to whomever you like)

Got one of these for Xmas, and it's the best thing I've ever owned. I had a defective brush-bar belt (it was missing teeth and snapped the second day) and Dyson shipped me two more, along with a new brushbar. Their customer service is great, although I did complain about the fact that [one department store] no longer services Dyson cleaners. It's extremely powerful, and if you have old or frayed carpet, it *will* lift it, so turn off the brush in those areas. Picks up dog fur like you wouldn't believe--my boyfriend rolled around in a black t-shirt to test it out! :)

I must admit that the Dyson vacuum cleaner I bought worked well for the first few months. It had excellent suction and my carpets and furniture looked great. I have 4 dogs so this is no easy task. However, then disaster struck. My belt broke and despite going to many local stores I could not find a replacement. [...] I have called Dyson many times and they can not tell me when the belt will be available. I begged to return my Dyson vacuum so I could buy a new vacuum and they refused. I now basically have a very expensive Dyson coat rack in my closet and have since had to buy a new vacuum. DO NOT BUY A DYSON - THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWFUL AND YOU WILL NEVER GET REPLACEMENT PARTS EVEN AS SIMPLE AS A BELT!!!!!

This machine is AMAZING!!!! There is not a better vacuum. I clean houses for a living and I have used every one there is. The lady I clean for with this vacuum has 10 cats, 2 dogs, and lives on a farm. She tracks everything in the house. I have been using this vacuum at her house for a year and it has not lost one bit of suction. It works just as good today as the first day I used it. It also bad fro beneath the carpet, not just what is on the surface. I tell everyone to get one even though it seems like a lot of money to spend... it has a 5 year warranty and it will most likely be the last vacuum you ever buy. You will get your money worth. When you buy the cheaper crappy vacuums you end up having to buy a new one at least every 2 years.

This may sound like a commercial but this is the best vacuum cleaner I have ever owned. I moved into a new house three years ago. At the time, I owned a top of the line Fantom. When I took possession of the home the carpet had just been vacuumed. I ran my Fantom and picked up a bit more construction dust and some loose carpet fibers. Two and a half years later, I purchase this Dyson DC17. I ran it in just one room and it is filled with very fine powdery dust that was still there from the construction. The Fantom did not pick it up in all that time.

I will admit that the suction on this unit is quite strong and remains so at the age of 6 months. It you have delicate or inexpensive carpet, I would recommend that you turn off the beater bar or buy a less powerful Dyson model. I was amazed at the carpet fibers this cleaner picked up when my Fantom no longer came away with anything. It finds every pet hair. My carpet feels truly clean.

I love this cleaner so much that I have moved it to the second floor (more carpeting up there) and just bought a new Dyson Slim for the first floor.
