I bought 2 bookcases. When I got home with them, one of them was damaged. The instruction booklet said to call this "customer service" number before returning the item to the store. I called and when a week had passed and I had not hear anything from the company, I returned the bookcase to Target. The next bookcase I brought home was in worse condition than the first one. It looked like someone had tried to break it over their leg. I went back AGAIN to exchange the bookcase. I checked this one before I left. I did not turn one of the pieces over and it ended up being damaged too. I have hidden it against another piece of furniture.
Not only that, when I set the 2 bookcases next to each other, the shelves do not line up with each other. It wouldn't be a big deal if I only had one. If you buy 2, be careful if you buy multiple bookcases.
They look great, except the hassle that I know I went through. I am still not satisfied with them, but I don't want to haul another bookcase back to Target.

Beautiful, quality materials, but not perfect

For the price, these are great bookshelves. Gorgeous color. The faux-wood is beautifully textured and kind of laminated on so it's not easy to scratch, great style. The back is sturdier than many cheap shelves. Love them. The ALL real wood shelves of this size at the furniture store are not as pretty and cost around $300. Also, check the dimensions. The picture makes them look narrower than in real life (to me).
Tips:
First, unless you're real handy, don't try assembling without instructions. Second, I feel they needed extra support. Nothing worse than when supports don't hold up and rip up the wood when they come apart. Was worth a small expense and time to assure they would stay together for many years.
The camlocks worked well attaching the shelf fronts. Then when I tried the camlocks to hold on the fixed shelves, they were difficult and some kept stripping. I had to put the project aside, and the loose cam locks left all the joints a little loose. A larger Phillips head screwdriver would've been helpful, too.
What I did: Bought 4 very small L brackets in the shelf hardware section [...]. I used those 4 brackets hidden underneath the center shelf to hold it tight to the sides. Then I not only drilled supports to hold the bottom to the sides, as instructed, but screwed the top to the sides as well.
Supplies to buy: One package of four L brackets (one inch on each part of the L) and eight 5/8" wood screws to screw them in. (I predrilled some holes). Then four 1 1/8" wood screws to screw the top to the sides at an angle. (You'll want to drill a narrow guide hole with a wider space near the opening so the screw will countersink. Look at the predrilled holes under bottom shelf for a visual.)
I hope that helps someone. I'm not an expert with woodwork, but feel it worked really well and am going soon to get another espresso bookshelf to put together.

We recently moved. At our previous home, there were great built in bookshelves so we didn't limit our consumption of books AT ALL!!! Sadly, we had to downsize a bit and had to find bookshelves within our budget to match our existing furniture. We bought two three shelf bookcases and two 5-shelf bookcases. Both 3's were/are GREAT!!! We LOVE THEM. We also appreciate the wall mount hardware included since we have little children. But, the 5-shelf bookcases were both shattered in the mail when we received them...and now target has sold out!!!!!! So, we cannot afford to buy a comparable, more expensive couple...and we are out of book storage. Really, really disappointed.

It was easy to put together if you follow the instructions. I'm a 100 lb girl and I was able to put it together by myself in an hour and 30 min. It looks great. The dark color makes it look more expensive. My only issue is that some of the wood had little nips and scratches. Nothing huge but visible. However I don't mind because it gives it that old kinda antique look. Also the back and side are made of thin material so I'm a bite worried about how long it will last and if it will hold up durning a move. The shipping was kind of expensive and expect a 7 foot tall box in the mail. I would recommend it as a moderate price bookshelf and I'm thinking about getting another one or the other expresso pieces.

I bought two bookcases despite the reviews and one bookcase was fine but the other bookcase was damaged and I had to buy glue to put it together, hopefully it will hold. I like the color and the price however, the directions were not clear and some of the screws were missing. I would buy another one and hope it is not damaged.

This bookshelf looks awesome, especially considering how inexpensive it is. I can't vouch for how easy or hard it is to put together (someone else assembled it for me), but I do know that it was super easy to adjust the shelf height. For the price, I thought it might be flimsy or cheap looking, but the espresso color is rich and the piece is very stylish. And I see that it is on sale now - I wish I needed another one because I would buy it in a heartbeat.

This was easy to assemble and looks BEAUTIFUL in my bedroom. I loved the expresso color and modern look of this bookcase. I needed something to put my husband's books and my books so I went to target and found this bookcase. We had it up with books in less than 1 hour. I had read the negative reviews and was worried that it would be missing pieces or it was damaged. But it had everything! Nothing broken. [...] Couldn't be happier.

I just love this bookcase. It was easy to put together (and I am no handy woman). To make it quicker I used a cordless drill instead of a screwdriver. It looks great and I really like the sturdy shelves, they don't warp. I have purchased other brand bookshelves in the past and the shelving was not so sturdy the center shelves warped. The backing on this was easy to line up as there is a groove it fits nearly perfectly into. (A problem I have had in the past with other bookcases). I also like that the trim on the top does not overlap so you could put another bookcase right next to it without any gaps. I plan to buy a few more of these including the three shelf and two shelf. It looks classy. And the quality is fantastic for the price. My only negatives is one hole not completely drilled for the shelf peg but I cleaned it out with a screwdriver and it was fine. The dark color does show the dust a lot quicker and a few shelves had minor surface scratches on the wood UNDER the finish which is hardly noticeable unless you are looking for it. (I noticed it because my overhead light reflected off the wood). And it doesn't show with the books anyway. All in all A GREAT BOOKCASE FOR THE PRICE

Solid piece, great value, holds lots of books ! Not hard to put together. Also bought the 2 shelf piece, no problems with it either. Wish they made an espresso console table too...
