No Defects....

After putting off buying one of these due to mixed reviews concerning the brown boxed ones, I finally asked the guy stocking these if they had any white ones in the back. I told him about the bad reviews I read and he told me that the only ones they sell are brown and that the white boxed ones were phased out. Don't know if that's the straight dope, but I cracked down and got a brown boxed one anyway. All the pieces were fine and exactly what one would expect for the price. Assembly took a little over an hour and the thing looks just as good as the one they have had on display since as far back as 2007. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.

Beautiful, but could be made better

I recently purchased and assembled this bookcase. I love the classic look, it is stylish and timeless. The color is rich and beautiful and it looks more expensive than it is. However, the cam fasteners it came with were VERY easily stripped out. I have assembled a lot of different types of furniture and this was probably the softest metal I have encountered. It works best when you use a flat-head screwdriver instead of the phillips, and make sure you push very hard to make sure the cam nut is completely recessed in its hole. Other than that, I really like this item and will be purchasing another one soon.

I bought two of these bookshelves in store. The are lovely when put together and very sturdy. I found them simple to put together, just be warned that you need a space big enough to spread out all the parts, including two 6 foot long sides. My husband and I put them together in about an hour and a half total. It's easier with a power screwdriver, especially when attaching the back panel. I noticed no smell at all. I highly recommend these.

No one knows my bookshelves are from Target

We love our bookcases, but be warned: each took about three hours to put together. We didn't have any trouble understanding the directions or with the assembly. It was just a little time consuming (that back panel feels like it takes forever). But it's worth it! Once they were together and up, they looked fantastic. We get a lot of complements on them and no one believes us when we say they are from Target. The quality is great (especially for the price!) and they look beautiful.

This will be the last piece of furniture I ever buy from Target. The instructions were cryptic. I admire the person who wrote them very much. Their sense of humor is on par with Bozo the Clown. I look forward to big trash pickup day in my neighborhood, and the drive [to a different retailer] where I'll purchase a bookcase just as cheap, and yet crafted much better.

I called the manufacturer and they were aware of the faulty/defective bookcases in the brown boxes. Most Targets still carry these and are trying to get rid of them before they put the good ones on the shelves(they are phasing the old ones out because they're so cheap and break). Make sure your bookcase is in a WHITE box, not a cardboard box. If they don't have white boxes out, good chances they have them in the back, just ask!

Difficult assembly and cheap components

This piece of furniture was quite difficult to assemble--the reason for the 2 stars. It actually looks good once you FINALLY get it done...the directions don't help make it any easier. Also, I ended up splitting the wood on the upper beveled piece because you can't attach the included screws properly and had to just use some small nails. For [the price], you are not getting the best quality here and plus the headache of assembly...spend a little extra and get something better! One more thing--it stinks! Whatever finish is on it is very strong so if you're sensitive to smells, beware.

I currently have several pieces from the Dolce line in our home office. They are all-wood and surprisingly nice for DIY furniture. I needed a bigger bookcase, and decided to take a chance with this item since Target doesn't offer any larger bookcases in the Dolce line. After spending a good bit of time putting it together, I'm disappointed. Only the frame is wood, which I knew when I purchased it, but the melamine shelves are a noticeably different shade of brown. The real issue is that the shelves are not spaced evenly. This may seem like a minor detail, but I bought the bookcase specifically for grad school textbooks ad binders, and they fit on some shelves but not others. Why? Adjusting the shelf heights only makes matters worse. Very aggravating. The Dolce bookshelf I own doesn't have this problem. So, I will be shlepping the thing back to a store for a refund and buying multiple Dolce pieces instead...

After trying to find this in my local store for nearly a month, I finally got one and my husband assembled it last night. It went together fairly easily and seems to be of good quality. I bought it for my home office and it coordinates very nicely with my desk and hutch which came from Havertys and cost considerably more. I was a little hesitant to go ahead and buy this after reading some of the other reviews, but mine is quite sturdy and has no scratches. I am pleased with this bookcase and would recommend it.

Beautiful, But not the Sturdiest

I have 2 of the 5-shelf Bookcase in my Living Room and they are Beautiful! The first one took me about 4 hours to put together, the second one only about an hour and a half. We went to several Target stores to get them because so many boxes were damaged. I was surprised that they would sell them as badly damaged as the boxes were. After 4 Target stores, we found one with 2 where the boxes were in perfect condition. I love them, but I think they're not sturdy because they sit on carpet. On wood or tile I think they'd be better.
