I bought one, the gears stripped first time I used it within minutes of starting the batch. Took it back, got another and thought it was a fluke on the first one. Not so, have made about 3 batches and the gear stripped out and had to use the hand crank to finish the batch. Took it apart (as any guy would) found the gear stripped at beginning of the batch, not when it was getting solid, cheap plastic. The chinese have not found the quality button yet. This is junk, cute though, nice wooden bucket, looks great on the shelf, but don't buy one to make ice cream with unless you have kids to turn the manual crank.

Bought 2 of these freezers, one for a gift and one for myself. The one given as a gift quit after 1 min of running. The motor stopped running. The one I kept motor stopped when the mixture was near milk shake thickness. I tried to use the hand crank and the gears are stripped and the handle is about to break in two places. Both of these freezers were returned. No store should sell items of this poor quality.

The Target price is right, [...]. Problem is it is under powered. I tried 1/2 batch. As soon as the ice cream started to thicken (about 20 min.) the motor quit. Use the crank? I don't think so, that's why I bought an electric. Aroma would have a better product if they discontinued the hand crank & had a bigger motor. I returned it.

I got this as a Father's Day gift and the thought of letting the kids crank the handle and then using the motor to finish it off was a wonderful gift. We had to take the first box back as the bucket was pouring water-even after soaking it for 2+ hours. The 2nd bucket doesn't leak, but the motor quits way too early and the hand crank is noisier than the motor, plus we found a screw from the hand crank in the ice after it fell out. We are taking it back and not trading this time. The aroma stinks!

Similar to the other reviews: motor stops early/often, ice cream from a traditional recipe--that has always firmed up nicely before--was barely milk-shake thickness when motor would run no more. Hand crank is useless as handle won't secure properly on shaft with one screw, and gears stripped almost immediately (also as in other reviews). I wish I'd read these before we bought--will probably try Rival, as that is what we had years ago.

We got this off our gift registry, and use it all the time. It's easy to use, and after eight batches it's worked terrific every time, despite my husband's experimentation.

A side note: thicker ice creams and custards are usually finished well before 45 minutes, like the instructions say. If it seems to stop working, it's probably because your ice cream is so thick the paddle doesn't turn.

I do agree with some of the reviews that the motor could be a little, but I've had success making ice cream. I think the trick is to stay nearby and if the motor gets stuck, stop and crank it by hand a bit and then it will work again. I haven't had any big problems with it and it is a lot of fun to make homemade ice cream even if it is more work!

Used this one time and a month later when I went to use it again it was beginning to get all rusty around the metal parts.
