Best Fighter on modern consoles November 13, 2009 Reviewer:  L. Scott "Vasuri" Real Name See all my reviews >

At first glance, Street Fighter 4 might appear to be slower paced than previous games from the series; but once the basics are learned, the fighting can get very intense.

SF4 introduces a "Focus Attack" system which is a 3-stage chargeable move that functions both as means to parry and stun your opponents attacks as well as a way to link together devastating combos. At full strength, each character's focus attack is unblockable.

Casual gamers might be turned off by the difficulty of the different trials and challenges required to complete for Achievements; but they serve a valuable purpose and can work wonders in actually training you to become a better player.
Each character has a list of trials that are half-training, half-challenge to see if you can pull off some of the more advanced combos. Figuring out the timing of these moves can be difficult (the game offers no help in this aspect), but there are many YouTube videos out there that demonstrate them.

Online, the gameplay flows pretty well. Each match has it's own stability meter that shows you how solid the connection with the other player is. The pregame lobby is perfect for opting out of poor connection matches (or kicking out the other player). If you take advantage of this meter, then the actual lag in matches is uncommon, and rarely game-breaking.

Overall, this is a great game, and to use the cliche: "easy to pick up, but hard to master."
