My 5 year old son just LOVES this gaming system and is learning something in the process. He really wanted a DS for his 5th birthday, because another little boy in his class got one, but I won't allow any game system in the house that isn't education. So I did some research and decided to give the Leapster 2 a shot. I can't get it out of his hands now.
The only problems that I have found, is that batteries don't last very long. We have to replace them after a week or two. This is getting expensive. I would have rather paid a little more for the system and gotten the recharging station with it. Also, we are having a lot of troubles with inputting his log-in name. Every time we input it and press Ok, it deletes the name and says to input a name and press Ok. He just keeps logging into it as Guest.
He loves the game that it came with and also the Starwars game that came in the package that I purchased. He is learning his numbers and Addition and having fun doing it. I have not gone online with it yet, to see what options are available there. I plan on doing that soon. I love that it has an SD slot so that we can download games in the future rather than purchasing them at the store and keeping up with the cartridges. Just keep in mind, that it doesn't come with the SD card. That must be purchased separately.
I would recommend this gaming system to other parents. Just be aware that you may want to purchase the charging station along with the system. It has also passed the drop test (even gotten dropped all the way down the stairs), multiple times already, and is still working great. I like that there are a lot of games available and that the games from the first Leapster work in the Leapster 2 and that the opposite is true as well. I am very happy with this product and so is my son. I actually think that it is a better game system than the [..], which we purchased for my older son and if it came with software for older children, I would return the [..] for another Leapster 2.

the only thing this toy needs is an adapter plug

Love the toy, but I hate buying batteries once or twice a week. The rechargable batteries doesn't hold a charge on the leapster.Just wish I could plug it up in an outlet, and then that would be great!

This toy is great but, I wish i didn't check the price online to see it was on sale and then go to the store to find it full price. It doesn't specify it's an online sale only. And just this week I was supposed to receive another Leapster system in the mail and it was stolen and I don't want to risk it getting lost again. While I was at the store, I did see that they sell an a/c adapter for a few dollars and the recharging station for a lot more if this helps with the battery cost/ battery short lifespan. Other wise, a great educational toy:)

My 3 year old loves it! She hasn't put it down since she opened it for Christmas. Now I don't have to hear the fighting in the car over my 8 year old daughter's DS game. Yeah, she's only 3, but the game I got her teaches her how to trace her letters, and amazingly, she is following quite well. I really do recommend this for all kids...and parents!

I purchased this for my granddaughter's 4th b'day (4/09) and should have set up before I wrapped and gave it to her. First one was defective. Couldn't see what was on the screen...even at night w/all lights out. 2nd one is good. She loves her mini handheld gamer. Opted for the adapter instead of charging station. So far, so good. Everything is working fine. Haven't found where we can download add'l games yet...still working on it. I would recommend this toy. Bought a camera case to carry the L2, games and extra batteries rather than the L2 case, for travel and storage when not in use. Since I just purchased it, no idea on the durability yet.

My 4 year old daughter upgraded this past Christmas from the Leapster L-Max to the Leapster2. Like the L-Max, she just loves this system. The hard part is getting it OUT of her hands!
More than anything I am impressed with the educational qualities of the games. My daughter has improved quite a bit with her writing, spelling, and even math (addition, subtraction, greater than, less than, etc.). The graphics and audio are outstanding on the games and even I have had fun playing!
I completely agree that a charging station is a great investment. Be aware though that the charging station for the L2 is NOT the same as for previous models. One of my few complaints is that the L2 charging station feels "loose" when I put the game on it. If it weren't for the light, I wouldn't know that it was charging.
I have connected to the Learning Path online. I really love the fact that I can see how much my DD is playing each game as well as the types of questions she is getting right - and wrong. My one true complaint is the Rewards system. I had hoped that some of the rewards that could be earned would be additional props for the existing games or additional games. For example, it would be nice to be able to earn additional outfits for Pet Pals. Unfortunately all of the rewards appear to be certificates that you have to print out.
Regardless, I love this gaming system and have recommended it to all my friends.

I purchased the Leapster 2 for my toddler daughter...she loves it. I was surprised to see how easily it was for her to use. The games are extremely educational and I would recommend this to all parents who are debating between the Leapster and other handheld gaming systems. Also in reading other reviews my daughter has had her Leapster for about 6 months now and I have not had to change the batteries yet...I'm just wondering how long these other parents are letting their children play with the system per day????

My 3-year old was really excited to get this toy for her birthday and we have had high hopes for it but I am about heading to the store to replace it for the second time. The first one malfunctioned within one hour of setting it up. We thought maybe it was just an isolated problem when the touch-screen stopped recognizing it was being touched. I went to the store and replaced it, only to have the same thing happen after 2 days with the second one. Looking around at other reviews on the internet, apparently this is a common problem. I hope Leapster fixes the problem.

My sister bought this game for my three year old sons birthday this year. He likes playing with this game, even though he cant operate it that well he still knows how to get into the game and do what he has to do.
The free game thats on the system is very nice the numbers one, from this game my son is know counting in the seventies and eighties.
He had the game over a week now and often asks me for it. I would diffenently recommend this product.
Another great product by Leapfrog....

I bought this for my son for Christmas and he really loves it. Its worth the price, its durable, and easy to use. My son is 4 and has no problem playing the games. I love that Leapster has games with all the popular characters: Wall-E, Lightening McQueen, Diego, etc... My son's favorite is Wall-E. The games are educational and fun to play (I've played a few!). You can connect it to the internet, but we haven't done that yet, so I can't comment on the online features. The screen display is very clear. I was afraid it would have a grainy, hard to see picture, but it doesn't. Its clear. Great toy. I'm glad I bought it for my son.
