I have purchased a number of groomer tools ranging from Oster to Whal in the lower end product line and of them all this product will clip long fine dense hair with little issue. The key is the proper cutter angle and the speed. You cannot force the clippers through the coat, if you do you will only jam hair between the blades. These clippers use the rotary motor found in professional cutters and not the vibrator found in most lower end products.
There are two primary weaknesses;
The first is that the steel blades will dull fairly quickly. If you follow the instructions in the included CD and wash and dry your pet first the blades will last longer. You also need to insure you clean and oil them after every use.
The second is the lack of availability of replacement parts. Though there are regional repair centers with an 800 number there is a lack of information about the clipper or replacement parts such as the blades. If you go to the Conair site either Conair Pro or ConairPet neither have this clipper listed, hence replacement parts are not available to the home user.
If you ever have to remove or disassemble the cutter blades make sure you follow the alignment recommendations in the small brochure. You should insure the cutter blade is at least 1-2mm shorter then the comb blade (when fully retracted), from an imaginary line where the "teeth" of the comb taper to a point. (Generally, this is roughly 1/4" from the comb teeth points when you minimize the comb teeth length with the adjustment detent.) You should also insure that the cutter blade outer teeth edges align with the comb outer teeth edges.
If replacement blades were made available this unit would be a very good value. The main difference will be the lack of speed of the motor and a handy little ring for hanging the unit up while positioning the pet.

I bought this at my local Target, I have packed it up and am taking it back. The clippers do not CUT the hair. I have a maltese, who's hair is very easy to clip usually, but these clippers have dull blades, they just don't do anything. It's ridiculous! So, I decided to try to trim just using the included scissors, and believe it or not, they won't cut [...] either. What a waste of time.

At the moment, I have a dog with only half of a haircut because the clippers stopped cutting. I have an 80 lb. goldendoodle with a lot of long, fine hair. It worked fine the first time I used it. I cleaned and oiled the blade as instructed. About halfway through the second haircut, the blade got duller and duller to the point where almost no hair was being cut.

I bought these clippers in hope that it would help me maintain my dog's hair. I did exactly what the DVD said but it seems like your dog's hair has to be a certain texture and certain length to use them. My yorkie has thick long hair and it did nor work on his hair.

I have a terrier who has course/thick hair and desperately needed a haircut but with the economy the way it is I decided to branch out and attempt to cut her myself for the first time. I haven't used any other brand but this one is the best! I absolutely LOVE it! Would recommend these clippers to anyone! It's very easy to use, guides stay on very well and don't slide off and the unit itself does not get 'hot' and just pure wonderful!
