Get started right away with the camera. (OK you need to charge the battery first) But - no tapes, no fuss, the touch screen is smoother than an iPod in simplicity, response and cool factor. This is a HD as in Hard Drive/Hard Disk camcorder that rocks. Not to be confused with HD resolution as in not Hi Def.

Size - wow! This will fit in a mans inside coat or suit pocket. Light, perfect and comfortable to hold.

Now we've only used this for 1 day, but this is what we thought to share based on our first impressions.

Considerations:
- We purchased it for taping young children. Keep in mind, you'll need to back up at least 3' from the baby in order to get an an infant in the field of view. My suspicion is that with a 60x zoom, it's far sighted, meaning close ups are not its strength.
- Focus. We first used this in a small room during a party, it struggled on three occasions to focus on a subject 3'-4' away.
- Once in focus the quality is very good.
- My suspicion is that this will work wonders for anyone doing an outdoor event, activity, and as the children get into athletics.
- No optical view finder. No room for it. You need to use the LCD. But what is great (The Camera Powers on when you turn on the LCD.) Great!
- So we haven't tried it outside yet. I'm optimistic, but sometimes in bright sunlight the LCD may wash out and then you're toast. Again, haven't tried this yet, but a question in my mind.
- Last FYI to keep in mind, the lens cover is manual. How and why, when everything else is so smooth, why would this be manual? I don't know. So yes, we forget to close the lense cover. Easy, but with kids, it will probably mean a few extra smudges on the lens.

Playback on the TV was EZ to do. The connection is hidden on the front but plug and play. The resolution was great. We're not an HD TV Household so by Great I mean Great but not HD.

For the price it was a great value. No more tapes.

Would recommend getting an extra battery and charger. The battery life is 1 1/2 hours and if you plug in to the TV it drains it fast.

A note to Mac users. This camera is NOT mac compatible right out of the box. It records in MPEG-2 format which is not compatible with mac. In order to get it to work you will need the free program MPEG Streamclip and a [..] MPEG-2 Playback component from the downloads section. Once you get these pieces of software, it works well with mac. Overall, a great camera that is after a bit of work.

What a relief!! Finally a handycam thats not so coplicated...I LOVE THIS HANDYCAM...First of all it fits in the palm of your hand,very light...I love the fact that its touch screen and most of all its easy to use...its a hdd and i dont have to worry about buying dvd or sd cards... the video comes out great,has a great zoom,but too much zoom will have the camerea a little unstable but thats a not a problem.. still pictures comes out good,but not as great as a digital camerea but it serves it purpose...I took it to my daughters soccer game and everyone love it!I recommend this handycam and the price is great!

Was not sure what to expect, but the Sony Handcam far exceeded my expectations. It has been easy to use with terrific features. The instructions were easy to read and understand and the camera has features which allow even the most inexperienced operator to use easily. I would recommend this camera to both beginners and experienced videographers alike.

I purchased this camcorder for outdoor sports my grand kids are in. When I would try to take movies or still pictures, all I could see in the LCD screen most of the time, was a reflection of myself. The one day it was cloudy out and the next time I used it, it was sunny out. I contacted Sony support but nothing I tried helped so I returned the camera to the store. I have since purchased a JVC Everio GZ-MG630au and have had none of the above problems with the screen. I don't know if they forgot to put an antireflective on the LCD screen or if there is something else wrong but I can say that I would not recommend this camera model. I like Sony products but this camcorder was a big disappointment to me.

The zoom capabilities on this camcorder are fantastic. We were able to record chrisp videos from a football fields length away! The internal hard drive is plenty of storage, but it's great to have the option of plugging in an external card if more space is needed. You can set it up so that all videos are saved to the hard drive and still photo's can be saved to the memory card if you use that option. The ONLY thing that I don't like is that there's no light or flash on the camera, but the camera does have a backlight option that brightens the image if you are in low light situations. You can also set up the microphone to zoom along with the video. We purchased this camera so family can videotape our upcoming wedding. With the software that's included for editing, the quality of the images, and sound quality I'm sure we'll have a great keepsake thanks to this camcorder.
