Description

Swiss composer Gregorio Zanon (born in 1980) came to music relatively late, as an adolescent. The four string works recorded here reveal a composer with a fairly conservative (but not dogmatically conservative) aesthetic. They demonstrate a high level of assurance and technical skill, particularly in his idiomatic string scoring, for someone who had only been writing for about 10 years when these works were composed. Zanon's writing is frequently suggestive of various European folk traditions without ever being merely imitative or derivative. Romanèche Rhapsody for cello and string quintet and Concerto Grosso for string quintet and piano both allude to gypsy music, which seems to exert a strong pull on the composer. His String Quartet No. 1, the earliest piece on the CD, is also the most memorable, with an ecstatic, exuberant final movement. In his harmonic language, mood, and general sound, especially in the way he uses glissandi, Zanon's music sometimes recalls that of James MacMillan. Rhythmic variety and drive give his music plenty of energetic momentum. While he hasn't developed a unique or fully distinctive voice, these are entirely attractive and engaging works that show a composer with strong potential. Quatuor Terpsycordes delivers fully committed performances, and it plays with a gorgeous, warm tone and technical finesse, qualities that also characterize Marc Drobinsky's playing in the Romanèche Rhapsody. Claves Records, which frequently highlights emerging singers and instrumentalists, is to be commended for devoting this disc to a promising young composer. The sound is excellent: clean, warm, and realistic, with a great sense of presence. Stephen Eddins, All Music Guide
