Description
The French duo's first full-length effort is a fine if not uniquely remarkable dance effort; if it avoids the common trap of wearing out its welcome with too long an effort, it's mostly remarkable for being pleasantly functional and tasteful while not adding too much to what has gone beforehand. While the impact of microhouse lingers still at the end of this decade, Delon Dalcan are more given to gentle variations on familiar formulas, whether it's the steady syncopation of "Dirty Tanzer"'s bassline collapsing into a bit of filter murk before resolving into a clear strut, the understated schaffel of "Dreimusik" (perhaps the most immediately dated piece on the album, somehow), or the light vocoder murmurs and demi-industrial bass and beats of "Friend." It all fits in very well in the varied, multi-sound scene that electronic music has become, but it almost disappears too much into such a mix, something you can let play in the background. The three vocal efforts on the disc leaven things up a bit -- Ludmila's two tracks include the opening "The Tide," with a mournful key phrase repeated like a shrug of resignation against the clipped pace that acts as an understated but still memorable introduction. Meanwhile, the collaboration with Oxia, "248 KM," is easily a standout, a familiar charge of uplifting but not orgasmic melodies that never fully explode but always seem like they're about to get there.
