Unlike many of his literarily trained colleagues, cultural theorist Edward Said (who taught English and Comparative Literature) wrote extensively and authoritatively about music. MUSIC AT THE LIMITS collects 30 years of his thoughts on the aesthetics and politics of this art form, as he discusses composers from Wagner to Boulez, performers like Glenn Gould and Pavarotti, and conductors like Charles Dutoit and Carlos Klieber. And of course the author of the seminal post-colonial theory text ORIENTALISM gives his attention to prominent intellectual discourses put to the service of unpacking music's social significance. Conductor Daniel Barenboim, a longtime friend of Said with whom he cofounded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, provides introductory thoughts.
