Description
It was called "Disney's Folly." Who on earth would want to sit still for 90 minutes to watch an animated cartoon? And why pick a well-worn Grimm's Fairy Tale that every schoolkid knows? But Walt Disney seemed to thrive on projects which a lesser man might have written off as "stupid" or "impossible". Investing three years, 1,500,000, and the combined talents of 570 artists into Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney produced a film that was not only acknowledged a classic from the outset, but also earned 8,500,000 depression-era dollars in gross rentals. Bypassing early temptations to transform the heroine Snow White into a plump Betty Boop type or a woebegone ZaSu Pitts lookalike, the Disney staffers wisely made radical differentiations between the "straight" and "funny" characters in the story. Thus, Snow White and Prince Charming moved and were drawn realistically, while the Seven Dwarfs were rendered in the rounded, caricatured manner of Disney's short-subject characters. In this way, the serious elements of the story could be propelled forward in a believable enough manner to grab the adult viewers, while the dwarfs provided enough comic and musical hijinks to keep the kids happy. It is a tribute to the genius of the Disney formula that the dramatic and comic elements were strong enough to please both demographic groups. Like any showman, Disney knew the value of genuine horror in maintaining audience interest: accordingly, the Wicked Queen, whose jealousy of Snow White's beauty motivates the story, is a thoroughly fearsome creature even before she transforms herself into an ancient crone. Best of all, Snow White clicks in the three areas in which Disney had always proven superiority over his rivals: Solid story values (any sequence that threatened to slow down the plotline was ruthlessly jettisoned, no matter how much time and money had been spent), vivid etched characterizations (it would have been easier to have all the Dwarfs walk, talk and act alike: thank heaven that Disney never opted for "easy"), and instantly memorable songs (Frank Churchill, Leigh Harline, Paul J. Smith and the entire studio music department was Oscar-nominated for such standards-to-be as "Whistle While You Work" and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"). Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This was definitely an upgrade over the VHS version I had years ago. I watched it with my neice, although she ws just cover for my childhood reisit, I got this to review, but have always been a Disney fan. She laughed and smiled with the silly animals. The color and picture clarity was ust amazing. Snow White seemed to be dancing and singing in our living room. My neice was scared of the witch and held on to me for a few minutes. Something to think about when watching it with a toddler. After a little reassurance, she enjoyed the rest of the film.
A Disney classic for the ages.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a great movie for both the young and young at heart. It is a sweet movie which makes me long for the older movies that don't require so much stimulation to keep the audience interested. I wish there were more movies like this.

In 2001 "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was released on DVD. But now in 2009, the film makes its High Definition entry on Blu-ray with 1080p High Definition picture quality and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound. I am delighted to be be able to review this Diamond Edition Combo Pack for the one2one network that I belong to.
The picture quality is absolutely beautiful for a film that is 72-years old. The restoration and re-mastering has removed all dust and scratches. The picture quality is absolutely beautiful, as art backgrounds just look absolutely alive. I don't think I have realized how exquisite the backgrounds were, especially the amount of emotion that went into the animation. Picture quality for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition" is definitely magnificent.
Colors look brilliant. The sound is clean and without a scratch, although some dialogs lack detail. The 5.1 audio remix provides mildly effective separation and bass for the background music. Otherwise, it is neither better nor worse than the included original mono soundtrack
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition" is absolutely loaded with special features. In fact, I think this is the most special features I have ever seen for any DVD release of a film ever. Special features range from 1080p High Definition and 480i Standard Definition. Soundtrack is in English, French and Spanish 2.0. Subtitles are in English SDH, French and Spanish. Also is a booklet including a navigational overview of the special features included on both Blu-ray discs.
The Hyperion Studios tour on the second disc is almost worth the price of the DVD Diamond Edition Combo Pack alone. It is separated into sections representing the various departments within the studio. Each section is displayed as a high def capture of an old black and white photo taken of that department in the studio. And as old as the photos are, they absolutely pop off the screen. Info is presented as narrated bits of old footage and sound clips to explain what went on in this area of the studio.
Snow White Returns - Newly discovered storyboards suggest a brand new Snow White mini feature that never got made. For the first time, current Disney animators show how this short story would have played. This always blows me away; the amount of well-preserved vintage memorabilia and historical information that Disney has preserved.
What is great about the bonus features is not only how interactive Disney has made them, but also how fun they are. Even when one is at the main menu, waiting to make their selection, the Magic Mirror will talk and make suggestions. The Magic Mirror knows if it is a viewers first time visiting a section, or if they are returning and will make such funny remarks as, "I have many tricks up my sleeves, despite the fact that I have no sleeves." This seemingly simple menu actually adds greatly to the overall fun of the Blu-ray experience. The only item that may cause some confusion or dismay with viewers is a section on how to utilize the digital copies of Disney movies that are included with some of their Blu-rays. This seems completely out of place and should have been left off the disc, especially since no digital copy of the film is included.
As to the set as a whole. Wow! Disney knows how to put a package together and this set seems to have it all. Included for a limited time is a DVD version of the movie, nice for families that have DVD players in other rooms or need one for a travel player.
I give this Diamond Edition Combo Pack a “mine full of jewels”. My family and I were enthralled with Snow White from beginning to end, three times on the first night I received this movie to review. A collection worth owning.

Clearly it's a classic, one that everyone should own. We've all seen it and it's a movie that should be shared and watched with family today.
My 3yr old laughed throughout the entire movie. The animals acting silly at the beginning had him rolling with giggles. It was so much fun to see how much he enjoyed it. Highly recommended. I haven't had a chance to watch the blu-ray but I have no doubt it will be just as spectacular!

I was never a fan of Snow White myself but still have my original VHS from when I was younger. I got the Diamond Edition as a preview and can definitely say that I enjoyed it much more this time around, and whats more is that my kids loved it. It looks awesome on Blu-ray and the songs sound crisp and wonderful. My toddler old and even the older one were more than happy to sit through it and enjoyed singing along to it and even spent some time exploring the features on the extra disk. I am very happy with this set and will definitely be buying more of the great movies Disney puts out in the future.

I absolutely love this new and updated version of this classic Disney film. Amazing bonus features, including story boards that elude to a sequel. I have loved this movie since I first watched it as a little girl. Now I get to introduce it to my children all over again. Fantastic!

It was a wonderful experience to sit together as a family and share this Disney classic with the younger children for the first time. I was a little concerned the witch would scare the younger ones, but they were fine, and are already asking to see the movie again. It's not every movie that can bring them together to sit in quiet stillness and drink it all in. Snow White is, truly, a timeless classic.

I was thrilled to receive my Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (DVD/Two-Disc Blu-ray + BD Live w/DVD packaging) [Blu-ray] edition. I love how you can get both the DVD and Blu-ray in the same package. It is very convient to be able to watch it on Blu-ray but still be able to let others watch it who just have a DVD player. The movie looked great. It also came with extras to watch like:*First time ever in High Definition 7.1 sound, all new music video,
Disneyview - Expanded viewing experience, Disney Family Plan - games for everyone to enjoy, backstage Disney - go behind the scenes of this legendary tale and classic Bonus features include Dopey's Wild Mine Ride Game, Karoke Sing A Long. My family really like the games and karoke sing a long. It is great to be able to watch a wonderful classic movie and they play fun games or karoke afterward. I would definetly recommend this version of the movie.
