Future-proof!, July 30, 2008 The learning feature allows this remote to handle all devices, even those not on GE's code list. This means it should be able to handle any future device. It also means it can handle devices not typically associated with a universal remote. For instance, I made the "DVD mode" control my fan since I don't have a DVD player. You choose which button does what. For instance, I assigned the power button for fan on/off, the volume buttons for fan speed, and the arrow buttons for osciallation on/off. If you'd rather use codes for setting up some of your devices, you can. And then you can use the learn feature to alter the settings to your liking. For instance, I used one of the codes to set up my VCR. It worked almost perfectly but didn't handle "counter-reset", so I took the ten seconds to assign a button for that task.
The learning feature is very easy to use: in learn mode with the remotes facing each other, press a button on the GE remote, then press a button on the old remote, press another button on the GE remote, etc. And if you later want to change or add something, you don't have to start all over again. Just set the button you want to set and everything else will stay the same. (Of course, if you WANT to clear everything and start over you can.)
The remote is comfortable to hold and I like the layout of the buttons. Mode, power, channels, volume, etc are together and easily thumb-controlled up top. Menu setting buttons and play/rewind/etc. are together and easily thumb controlled on the bottom. The mode buttons are arranged in a circle, so they are easy to distinguish just by feel (TV at 12 o'clock, stereo at 5 o'clock, etc).
In summary, I think this remote is brilliantly designed and extreemely versatile. At only a few dollars more than the non-learning remotes, it is an incredible bargain.
