BEST ride for the bucks, April 18, 2009 Grab a beverage, this will take a bit.
I wanted a bike that was sturdy and comfortable. Mostly comfortable. I am 57 years old, good health and 55lbs over weight. I have not touched a bike in over 10 years when I used to ride a ‘mountain bike’ quite a bit. The bike would also be my exercise. I decided on this model for 3 reasons.
#1. It’s a Schwinn. I know Schwinn has gone through a few hands over the years and is not the same bike company that it was when I was twelve, but it is still a Schwinn and the name stands for quality.
#2. Target. This store has always treated me right. And as you read on, did fine on this.
#3. You guys. When I decided on what bike I needed and price, I read all there was to read about it. Including all the reviews here.
The guy in the Target bike department told me it would take him about 20 mins to assemble the bike, and that this service is free. I bought us a couple of Pepsi’s and watched him as he put it together. Mainly just the handlebars and peddles. He sized me up and set the seat and handlebars to my size. I told him I will need the Schwinn big and comphy seat that they sell. (Remember, I am 55lbs overweight) He got one off the shelf and put in on my bike. After all the checks and small adjustments we both went up to the service desk to pay for it and I asked to see the manager on duty. I asked him about the warranty. They told me that if for ANY reason I did not like this bike in the first 30 days, that I could return it for a full refund. And that there is a 90 service/repair warranty.
Put the bike in the trunk of my car (it is NOT heavy at all, easily lifted in and out, remember I am 57) and took it to the pro-bike shop right from Target. There is really only one of these type of bike stores in Davenport. I asked for a quick check of the bike to see if it needed anything or if there was any defects. (His shop does not sell “comfort” bikes and since I bought my mountain bikes from him years ago he said he would) After a good 30 mins of inspections he told me that for my weight the number of spokes were perfect. The shocks were well placed and compression was as it should be. The steel frame will help reduce shocks and vibrations. The Shimano shifter and gears were fine and the brakes were the best. Overall he said to get a better ‘comfort bike’ I would have to build a factory and make my own.
Got home, put on my helmet, and rode. After 1 hour of riding I returned home with a big smile on my face. “Right out of the box” this bike rides like a champ. Easy to peddle and shifting is quick and easy. Yes, shifting the gear ranges on the left side (1 - 3) takes about 10 seconds to get used to, but if you let the gearing do it‘s job and hear/feel the click on the number, no prob.. After that it is second nature. Right side (1 -6) is slick and accurate. Left the cement and tried the grass in the park. I could not feel any bumps.
I have been riding this bike daily for over a week now. The bike is exactly as stated, a comfort bike. I can ride for hours with no effort. I have adjusted nothing (even though Target said they would for free) and my wife has ordered the woman’s version for herself. This bike is rugged, easy to get around with and just a pure joy overall to ride. I feel like I am 12 again. I wonder where I can buy PF Flyers? hehehehe
