No tapes! Records right to harddrive. Picture quality is excellent. There's even an "easy button" literally. You can't screw up even if its your first time using a camcorder. If you want to use manual controls, there are many, including aperature, exposure, focus, white balance, etc. There are two negatives.....The manual focus is controled with a joystick instead of a focus ring and it's tough to be smooth and acurate. The other drawback goes for all HDD and flash memory camcorders, your recordings are stored using AVCHD compression which is very complex and requires a very recent and somewhat highend computer to edit. I've had this camera for 3 months and it still amazes me when I watch my footage. Awesome!
