it's oooo-kay...BUT.... July 5, 2004 Reviewer:  taylor (Chicago)  See all my reviews >

I was pretty excited to see the rainbow maker in action after reading the reviews... but ended up a bit disappointed:
1. It DEFINITELY needs DIRECT sunlight. That means when you look out the window you wish to stick it on, that you actually SEE the physical shape of the sun in front of that window while it's shining in; otherwise you ARE in for problems. When the sun moves and ceases to be in front of that window, it will begin to stop. And, NOTE what TIME you HAVE that 'direct sun' and if it is a time that you will even BE in the room to appreciate it (to justify its cost!).
2. The rainbows are just ok. I wasn't filled with the excitement that other reviewers were. And neither were my 3 cats (it kept interest for about 30 seconds, tops, and they left the room!). The rainbows are small, about 3-4 in. MAX. And mixed with the high amount of sunlight shining into the room, they were not so noticeable or impressive. More like a sparkling of a flashlight on the wall. Though the ONLY room in our whole house we have with enough sunlight to make it work is our kitchen, and maybe the vastness of the space and all the 'stuff' already on the walls, cancelled out much of the 'effect'. I'm willing to consider that in a better space, it could be cool(?!).
3. You only get rainbows from the number of facets on the crystal. This is a pretty flat crystal. It would have been better with a multi-faceted round ball.
4. Another thing to keep in mind and PLAN for (before purchasing), is that this must suction on a window WITHOUT a screen. It won't work through screened light, or HANG for that matter. SO, now you need a window with DIRECT sunlight that you DON'T use with a screen, AND don't open another window 'over' that space (it sticks out about 2 in.). Again, some people may have that PERFECT space; in my house it only works in one small non-functioning window that gets 'direct' light for about 2 hrs a day, very EARLY in the AM. For this reason alone, I don't think it was WORTH the high price I paid.

Otherwise I guess its o-k. Another note to new buyers is to give it at least 24 hrs in the window before judging if it really works or not. I saw some very slow movement on day 1, so I knew it 'functioned'. Left it up and by the next day it seemed to have absorbed enough POWER to actually 'get it going'. So, DO give it some patience! If it still doesn't go after that, it MAY actually function; it just isn't getting that D-I-R-E-C-T sunlight that it DOES REQUIRE. And don't expect much on cloudy days either. So, here in the Midwest, my hopes for year-round 'rainbows' are NOT so good. Again, probably not worth the cost. My advice for this area: just buy a small round crystal at an arts show/shop and hang it in any sunny window and you'll get the same 'effect' without all the prerequisites. In the South or West, it may be worth the try.
As for me, I'll keep it up. It's not worth the additional cost to return it, but if I discover someone with a better window for it, I will pass it on to them and maybe they'll get more enjoyment from it (like the other reviewers did). But DO your homework before investing(!); otherwise BE prepared for some disappointment.

I love this! It also keeps my cat busy as he loves to try to catch the rainbows as they dance around the room. I came back to order some more to give as gifts [...].

Love rainbows, cheer up every day - This is it. March 16, 2005 Reviewer:  J. Coulson "Deco Eclectic" Real Name (Chicago, IL USA)  See all my reviews >

I ordered this for myself last year. I bought two one for my atrium and one for my great room. Both are in windows facing west here in Chicago. The movie Pollyanna started my love of rainbows and prisms. They do need a bright day and sun must shine on them, but they produce rainbows all over the rooms and show on front door about 30 feet from window. They also shine on a large wall mirror where they are reflected on the west walls themselves. A sea of moving color. I loved them so much I sent one to every member of my family and as gifts for friends. My sister has bought some for her husbands side of the family. Don't expect IMAX from one small crystal. But if you love a rainbow and want something to cheer you up every day This is it. I have no problem with mine or any in the family.

Love Those Rainbow !!! January 3, 2006 Reviewer:  Mr. PAUL F. E. Mennucci "PFEM" Real Name (San Francisco, Ca, USA)  See all my reviews >

To the Bozo that said she needs to give a push. You never have to give it a push if you follow instructions. You have to have it under the SUN to work properly. I have two of them and I recommend them highly to anyone. They make a great gift and at this price, it's super as I've seen them much higher in other catalogs. I've had mine over 3 years and never once have I had to give either one a push. Like I said before, they need to be in direct Sunlight. Happy New Year !!!!

Making the Elderly Smile February 21, 2004 Reviewer:  Mary Jane Poole (Frederick, Maryland)  See all my reviews >

I have purchased several of these and everyone loves them. However the one that loves it the most is my mother who is in an assisted living facility. We placed it in a sunny window and it started it's magic light show. The next day, my mom called, to tell me how she invited all her friends in the see the rainbows on her walls. So many came throughout the morning that they were coming in shifts. She has now asked," I wonder what it would look like with two in the window?". So I am getting another one for her today. I highly rate this a 5 star for the elderly who need a rainbow of color in their lives.

crystalovely! April 1, 2008 Reviewer:  Ms. Geneva (Virginia, USA)  See all my reviews >

I have had mine for over a year, and compared to my stationary crystals, it's really unique and fun to see...when it works. It needs a good amount of sunlight time before it gets moving. A passing cloud makes it start all over again, building up power. It works best in my southwest window during the winter and spring months when the sun is a little lower in the sky--must be the angle of the panels, which, maybe someday, the manufacturer could make adjustable? I still get rainbows from the crystal when it's not moving. Mine also usually needs a push now and then, and Mr. Paul who called someone a bozo regarding that issue probably needs more rainbows in his life to chill out.

Needs help to work November 16, 2004 Reviewer:  Katherine A DeMille (Leesburg, VA)  See all my reviews >

I bought this thinking of the movie Pollyanna and wanted to share it with my daughter. It does work but only after I manually start it spinning. It does not spin on it's own, I have to start it every time. It will spin for quite a while even without direct sun light. But it should spin without having to activate it every time!!! Bit expensive for not working on it's own.

Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker Very Cool August 6, 2004 Reviewer:  M.S. (IA)  See all my reviews >

Great idea. Definately needs direct sunlight. Window suction cups do not work at all (window suction cups have never worked on any other application I've tried either - so, it is not the Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker's fault). Must use alternate methods to hang in a window. Not very effective or attractive ways to hang from the molded thingies (or whatever those tabs are). But I love the idea of Solar-Powered and the Rainbows are fantastic.
