wonderful little composter

I've had a NatureMill composter for several months now and it really is changing the way we think about trash. What a great invention, to turn trash into something useful that you can add to your garden and watch as your vegetables grow and come back to your plate.
The little machine takes pretty much anything we trow away in the kitchen (except big bones). It can handle meat and fish and egg shells which our regular backyard composter can not. We had some learning to do at first, getting the cultures started, which is explained pretty well in their instruction manual. Definitely worth it if you consider all the trips you save going outside to the compost bin. And now our regular trash (what's left of it) has basically no smell at all since there is no food in it.
We have made several batches already, and we have learned that some things compost better than others. Coffee grounds, egg shells, and lettuce all go down fast and smell nice. Flowers for some reason do not - the stems on ours are probably too hard, so it takes a long time to break down. We tried paper, they do not recommend that, and a little seems to be ok but really not like a whole bin of shredded paper. Guess the junk mail will have to go elsewhere.
Overall, a great little machine, definitely worth the investment. We are saving up for another to put outside for our pet waste (yes, they have a model for that too).

super solution for global warming

I just love my NatureMill. It solves an important ecological issue of food waste, which produces methane gas in landfills and that causes global warming. Food should instead be turned into fertilizer and garden plants and back to the kitchen table. Full circle! I used to compost, but it was such a problem with rats here and long cold winters that we gave it up a while ago.
Initially I was very hesitant about this machine. I saw it on Oprah but it just seemed too good to be true. They've obviously been in business for a while and have made the refinements over time. It's a little quieter than my fridge, and smells kind of like vegetable soup when you lift the lid - certainly an improvement overy my kitchen trash bin, which is no basically odor free because these days it has only a few plastic wrappers in it and I hardly even have to take it out. To me, the NatureMill is almost like just another recycling bin, but for food waste only. It doesn't take corn cobbs or steak bones, which is understandable. But it does quick work on coffee grounds, spoiled fruits and vegetables, table scraps, etc. It gets very hot inside there so the company says you can safely compost cheese, egg shells, and meat scraps, which I have just started to do and so far so good.
My compost is amazingly dark and rich. You can't buy stuff like that. All you get in a store is dry, dusty, dirt-looking material which probably is mostly dirt with hardly any compost at all. When I make my own compost, I know it's real, and boy is it good stuff.
I have the bright green version, but then I bought the cabinet mounting install kit direct from the companys website (which is a great space saver), so mine is totally hidden now under the counter top and maybe I should have gotten the cheaper plain black version direct from the company instead. Either way, great invention and I couldn't live with out it. One day we will all tell our kids how we didn't know any better when we were growing up and wasted so much.

My little home composter has been chugging away for nearly a year now. It has made dozens of batches of compost. I still can't believe how fast it turns our organic waste items into hot, black, fragrant compost. I was always under the impression that compost takes years and is very messy, but this system is different because it has a small motor and an air filter. There is basically no smell. It takes a few weeks to get the cultures activated, and during that time the instructions say to keep the machine closed. It all makes sense if you follow the instructions.
I like how you can add more types of foods than with regular compost bins or worm composting. Those types of composting do not allow meat or dairy products or even egg shells. They are basically limited to vegetables. The Naturemill allows all of these, which is because it is so hot all the time in the well insulated machine. There is even a model that is designed for dooggy doo, so you know it can handle meat if it can handle that. But it can not handle very hard things like corn cobbs or avocado pits. That is understandable and anyway those won't degrade in a backyard bin.
In summary, this is an expensive machine but worth every penny. The convenience alone, of not having to take out wet smelly trash or make trips to the compost pile is worth it. As a bonus you get tons of your own compost whenever you want it.

This is a good machine and I am proud to own it and do my part to reduce my environmental "footprint" as they say. It turns food into compost very fast. I saw a video of it on the net before I bought it, which showed over the course of 2 to 4 days you basically have compost. And sure enough that is what it did to my banana peels and coffee grounds and leftover meatloaf. Unfortunately it does not work for everything. Surprise surprise. Avoid paper becauase that gums up the mechanism, even shredded papers. And definitely do not attempt to compost an entire loaf of french bread because I guarantee you will be fishing that out once the jam light comes on!
This machine is made like a cooler with black squishy recycled plastic material. It is great for keeping in the heat which I think is the secret to composting so fast. If you care about appearances, I get the red version or other colored version. I have the red and it is has a very smooth and easy to clean surface. Otherwise you have a plain black recycled plastic composter which would have been fine for me because I keep it in the garage anyway.

Everybody should use this machine to create less waste in the world. It is easy to use and less work than taking out the trash and is made of recycled materials. I can't even think about putting food in the trash anymore. Now there is no excuse to not go green.

the envy of all my friends

I purchased my little Naturemill composter last summer. Whenever people come over they ask me 'what is THAT thing in your kitchen'. I tell them the whole story and they are shocked. My friends are all GREEN with envy! They can't believe it actually makes compost indoors, even after they see and smell it for themselves!
But it's really true. It makes great compost right there in my kitchen. Smells like almonds, and only when you open the lid and really stick your nose down in there. I drop all kinds of things in there every day that normally I would throw into the trash which would end up in a landfill somewhere. I can't imagine doing that now. It's so wasteful.
It takes a few weeks for the first batch of compost critters to become an established colony. During that phase they recommend to not add anything and basically leave it closed while it works through it's startup phase. I so wanted to add more scraps right away! It was a little frustrating, but worth the wait. Now it purrs along nicely and eats up just about anything I throw at it (except bones).
I have exactly two complaints about my naturemill. One is that it was a bit noisy when I first got it. The instructions mention that, and just as they say it does get quieter within a few weeks after it breaks in. If everything I bought was noisy for a few weeks that would be a real problem! But again, worth the wait in this case.
My second complaint is that when I leave my house I have compost withdrawal. I mean, every time I go to a restaurant, or a friend's house, or a cafe, or on vacation, I feel terrible about "wasting" all that great food waste. I know it sounds silly. But imagine not being able to recycle bottles and cans any more. It's quite addictive. It can be difficult.

Garbage Gobbler Gets Gold

I had great expectations for the NatureMill Pro and was not disappointed. It was very easy to set up, though I did get a bit impatient during the first week "set up period", but after that I began feeding it my dinner scraps and watched it magically turn them into odorless sweet brown compost for my house and garden plants. I have a large outdoor composter for the garden and it now seems antiquated compared to this little beauty. I am amazed at the speed it turns ordinary scraps into gold for the garden. The promise of no-odor was a bit of a challenge to achieve at first, but I soon figured out the issue was that I was not adding enough dry materials to the wet scraps I was adding, it turned out to be an easy fix. I do have one complaint/suggestion, make it quieter, it's a bit like listening to a blender with laryngitis, so I may be moving it out to the garage in order to get a good night's sleep, but overall I am thrilled with the purchase and would highly recommend it.

If you have a lot of yard waste, do not buy this product. The motor is not powerful enough and it will jam, and besides it is much too small. We use it for kitchen scraps and left overs and for that it is a good solution.

This is a good composter but like anything mechanical, it will jam at some point. Don't overload it. Avoid celery and a long list of other things that they include (and some others that they don't mention like tea bags - the strings get caught around the mixer). Stay away from those and it should be ok. The compost is very good.

This composter has been good to us so far. We have had it for about a year and it has made many batches of compost which our shrubs really enjoy. They are growing in thicker this year than I have ever seen before. The chamber is just about the right size for us. Sometimes when we go away on vacation it gets dried out but it still works after that so it is ok. Othertimes if we have a ton of spoiled leftovers it takes a few days for all of it to go down. Much faster than our old bin anyway. I wish they made a bigger version for yard waste.
