Compairisons, and...No pump converter in this one September 25, 2007 Reviewer:  Pro/Con Review Mom (LA County, CA, USA)  See all my reviews >

Combined wisdom/experience of 5 moms, 1 pediatrician, 2 baby books, and a lactation specialist.

1) Each baby is different. What works well with one, works horribly with another. Buy a couple of bottles of different brands and see which your baby does well with before you buy a bunch of one type. Or borrow from others with babies (i.e. from baby-care classes you took, family, friends, or breast feeding support group) and try on your baby for a day. (Sterilize before and after such borrowing.) Remember: symptoms of colic start the second week and symptoms of acid reflux start the third week. So don’t open boxes of full sets of bottles until the end of the 3rd week.

2) Gas intake is affected by suction. If baby has to suck too hard/ not hard enough, she is bound to take in air even if there is no air in the bottle/liner to start with (due to gaps in suction letting outside air into mouth or into bottle). Also, a stuffy-nosed baby is likely to take in more air. So clear baby's nose (about once a day -too often makes it worse) if your baby gets stuffy, and figure out which nipples are the right flow for your baby.

3) Gas is not always the cause of discomfort. If the problem is gas, “simethecon” gas drops (like mylecon, or cheaper yet: target generic-in pharmacy isle-not baby isle) can help. If symptoms start the second week of life rather than the third week, it may be Acid Reflux (about 1/5 babies are eventually diagnosed with this). Symptoms can include: coughs to clear throat, shows difficulty breathing, refuses to eat even when hungry, cries during/after feeding, spit up is projectile or as much as one ounce, can’t sleep on flat surface but can in swing/car seat. (Books “baby 411” or “what to expect in the first year” have more info). If you suspect acid reflux, mention SPECIFIC symptoms to pediatrician. If you only mention crying, they won’t investigate further and will just attribute it to colic. Acid Reflux babies need modified eating/sleeping, and may need a prescription acid blocker.

4) The younger the baby, the slower the nipple flow needs to be. Also, babies with Acid Reflux need slower flow nipples. Here's how the different brands compare to my experience: From slowest to fastest- dr. brown “level 1”, playtex "slow" (same flow rate in latex vs. silicone), avent "Level 1" (same in regular avent and avent tempo) is equal to playtex "fast", similac, avent "Level 2", avent "level 3." The "medium" playtex nipple has two holes in different places, so I couldn’t measure flow rate.) I never tried the bigger dr. browns. I was told that the NICU at Irvine’s children’s hospital uses Playtex drop-ins because of the slow flow nipple and liners being more sanitary than washing bottles.

5) Nipple confusion is when baby gets used to one kind of sucking and either refuses anything that requires different sucking or fails to get enough milk when switches to something else. To prevent nipple confusion between any bottle and breast, mom should not feed baby with bottle the first month (dad and others can). This way baby learns to associate mom's feeding with boobs and retains correct sucking for breast. Also if you wait too long before introducing bottle, baby may refuse bottle feeding! There’s conflicting opinions on which bottle/nipple is best for avoiding nipple confusion (some say avent, some say playtex).

6) Heating bottles can release harmful chemicals into the milk. A baby book says because liners are less likely to release those chemicals, because unlike bottles they are heated only once rather than for repeated feedings and don’t have to be boiled or sterilized like bottles. And playtex claims that their liners are free of those chemicals to start with.

7) Some bottles and pumps are compatible, so you can pump right into what you use to feed baby. medela and evenflow pumps attach to any standard size bottle (medela, evenflow, dr. brown, similac single serve formula bottles- evenflow sells extra caps that you can use with them). Also, both playtex and avent make a pump converter to make them attach to medela/evenflow pumps. A Playtex converter is included in the premium package, and the Playtex one step milk storage kit. But good luck finding an avent converter (not sold at this store or the other popular baby store) or you have to pump into something else and then transfer. avent pumps pump directly into regular avent bottles, but need converters for avent tempo and avent via milk storage containers (the avent via 10 pack includes 2 converters).

8) Mixing powder formula in liners can be difficult (especially the added-rice formula). Stirring is not as effective as putting on the nipple and cap and shaking vigorously. Or mix a large batch in a pitcher for the day and then pour into bottles.

9) Consider clean-up time. The dr. browns bottle has 7 parts to clean. Most systems have 3 parts to clean (nipple, nipple ring, bottle). playtex drop-ins and avent tempo have only 2 parts to clean (don't have to clean nurser bottles except rinse occasionally, because milk sits inside disposable liner and doesn’t touch bottle).

10) Squeezing air out of avent tempo is easier for dads due to wider nurser bottle. Also, with playtex “slow” nipples it takes a long time to squeeze out all the air especially when there’s only few ounces of liquid. Pinching liner before screwing on nipple, screwing nipple on nurser too tightly, or squeezing air out of liners with too much force cause liner to fall in from edge of nurser and spill contents. Instead, Screw nipple on about 1/4 inch short of all the way, pinch liner to squeeze most of the air out, then screw nipple on (careful not to twist liner as you do) up until force is needed to go further. Then squeeze the rest of the air out.

Perfect for a Picky Breastfed Baby! April 2, 2009 Reviewer:  Zeke's Mommy "Jess" (Houston,TX)  See all my reviews >

After trying several different bottles :(Avent,Mam,Nuk,Thinkbaby &Green to Grow)These are the only bottles my Exclusively Breastfed son would take when I retuned to work. The latex nipples are much softer than the silicone ones & closer to the real thing. No gas issues either. I only wish the bottles were cuter. Otherwise I would have given them 5 stars. They aslo have a milk storage kit that adapts to Medela pumps to pump directly into a bag to store and drop in the bottle- ready to feed!

Best system for working mothers who breast feed July 18, 2009 Reviewer:  Bek in KY See all my reviews >

If you have to pump and store your milk, the Playtex system is the easiest. I pump into a drop-in sleeve (target brand is the same and much cheaper) and set up bottles when I get home from work. I stay two days ahead so I don't have to worry about freezing.

If you plan on returning to work, start pumping after feedings when your baby is about three weeks old. You won't get much at first; don't be discouraged. I am a regular dairy farm now and my baby is two months old.

Introduce the bottle at four weeks so you can pump and replace the bottle you used. The more you pump, the more milk you produce. Now she gets three bottles while I am away and milk from the tap when I'm home.

I love breast feeding. Don't give up! As long as your baby is growing and getting fat (pee and poop diapers daily), you are okay; your milk IS good enough! You do not need to suppliment with formula.

Flat lids make these the best of playtex! March 8, 2009 Reviewer:  Dene (CA)  See all my reviews >

I have tried countless bottles and 4 kids later - still love these the most. I prefer the fold down liners though, drop ins leak and pop open when "burping" the bottle for newborn feeding. The best feature of all is the flat lids that stack neatly in my diaper bag - I travel with a stack of nipples and lids, two bottle tubes and a roll of liners! It makes using a small diaper bag possible!

My baby loves these. September 24, 2008 Reviewer:  Mommy 4ever (Green Bay, WI)  See all my reviews >

This nipples are the perfect size for my newborn. He hates the Medela bottles because the nipple base isn't wide enough. I primarily breast feed, but these are great for babysitters when I go out. It is also so convenient to pump milk into Lansinoh or Gerber freezer bags and put them directly into these bottles. The only reason I'm not giving them 4 stars is because my husband doesn't like the bag system. He would rather just have a reusable bottle.

Great for breastfed babies September 9, 2008 Reviewer:  I'm Rick James' MOM "Amanda S" (Upstate, NY)  See all my reviews >

I had this set with my son, and I loved it. It's great for working moms who nurse. My son had no problems with nipple confusion, and it was so easy to drop a thawed bag of breastmilk into the bottle instead of a liner.

Some things need to be left alone . . . May 19, 2008 Reviewer:  Mommy to 4 Little Women "Cassie H" (USA)  See all my reviews >

I used the original Playtex nursers on my past 3 children with much success--no colic, gas, or spit-up. When we used them, they had a flat topped, latex nipple and you only had to squeeze the air out at the beginning of the feeding and they didn't refill with air. Now, with number 4, we've had one problem after another. We started out with the 4 oz. at 2 weeks and she did just fine for a couple weeks then started gulping, choking, and crying everytime she fed. I noticed there were little tears in the latex ALREADY! I replaced them with the silicone and she began to take nearly an hour to eat. At 1 1/2 months, she was still taking nearly an hour to eat and eating every 2 hours. The things I dislike most about these are as follows:

--leak in my diaper bag because caps do NOT seal top of nipple
--liners can detach and leak--more like soak mom and baby
--changed nipple design so air refills bottle everytime it is put down (even on its side) to burp baby
--can't shake to mix formula unless done without cap so I don't make a mess
--formula must be pre-measured using seperate measuring cup
--certainly not economical or enviromentally friendly since you have to toss out a plastic liner with each use.
Every baby is different and I swore by these until our new baby arrived. I think they shouldn't keep trying to improve upon an already excellent product. We use the Avent system now and have no trouble. You'll hear all kinds of complaints about them as well.

If it works for you--stick with it!

Doesn't Cause Nipple Confusion December 16, 2008 Reviewer:  Mom of Five (Sammamish, WA)  See all my reviews >

I breastfeed, but my husband or older daughter give these bottles to my baby when they babysit. They have not caused any nipple confusion. It is also convenient to just drop in the liner when I need to express to fill a bottle.

Perfect Starter Set July 13, 2008 Reviewer:  Mrs. H "Mrs. H" (South Florida)  See all my reviews >

First of all, the Playtex drop-ins system has been around for so long because it is excellent. I used this 11 years ago with my first daughter, then again for my second daughter, and I'll be using them again for my newborn. These are the best bottles for reducing gas and all the associated problems. These are the easiest to clean. I can't say enough great things about this system.

As for this set, it is a really great starter set for a newborn baby - it really makes a great gift for a mom who will be bottle feeding. It has everything you need to get started and even a few different nipples for you to experiement with to see which one your baby likes best. I highly recommend this product!

The BEST! April 18, 2009 Reviewer:  azmommy "K" (AZ)  See all my reviews >

I love Playtex Drop-Ins! I had issues with milk production (or lack thereof) and needed to supplement breastfeeding with formula from birth. My son had no problem switching between the breast and bottle (we used the silicone nipples). It was a huge relief as the snotty lactation consultant at the hospital swore up and down that there was no way we could successfully do both (she was basically suggesting I starve my baby until my milk increased, which never happened).

In addition to no nipple confusion you just can't beat the convenience. I've never had to scrub/sanitize/boil a bottle. I don't even own a nasty bottle brush. These really make life a little easier... awesome when you're sleep deprived and trying to adjust to life with a new baby.

And we never had issues with gas.
