Great Addition... December 23, 2005 Reviewer:  Michael W. (Atlanta, GA, United States)  See all my reviews >

If you are looking for something completely simple and automatic, prefab from a package, this is NOT the one for you. But if you like the idea of making your own ice cream with all natural ingredients, and experimenting with your own flavors, I think this attachment is great.

Making ice cream has three major steps: 1 - making/aging the batter; 2 - churning; 3 - setting. This attachment is really only for the second step.

Ice cream will never be great when it's made spur of the minute. Part of creating a great batter means allowing it to age (or chill between 36-40F) for a good 8 hours. This crystalizes the milk fat(should be 10-16%). Using a mixture of half&half and heavy cream is good.

Now the attachment. The churning process takes your aged batter and both chills it AND whips air into it, which thickens and gives volume to your batter. At the end of the churning, all you really have is a good thick custard. It only takes about 25 minutes with this attachment, but you're not finished.

The setting process is last, but still very important. It takes at least 4 hours in your freezer, but if you have done everything correctly (which is really not hard), your ice cream will be outstanding.

I actually love this attachment and have had great ice cream success. My only complaint would be that it is kind of tough to get the batter out of the dasher once it's churned - that is unless you use your tongue. :)

Fantastic if you already own a KitchenAid mixer November 20, 2006 Reviewer:  Audge (San Francisco, CA)  See all my reviews >

I have used this attachment to make really fun flavors of ice cream and sorbet. It is nice because you do not need to buy an additional machine to make ice cream...you can use your mixer! With all machines you need to plan ahead, but I am not always that great at deciding when I will want to make ice cream. I always keep my attachment in the freezer so that it is ready to go. The recipe book comes with 1 no-cook recipe (so you don't have to chill the mix before it's time to make ice cream), but I have a Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream recipe book that I love with tons of no-cook recipes! Convenience, great taste & texture, AND instant gratification :)

If you know how to make real icecream May 18, 2006 Reviewer:  Barbara L. Brumfield "Delights in truth" Real Name (Charlotte, NC USA)  See all my reviews >

I have read some of the reviews and only some know how to make real icecream. Even with a stand alone maker, you have to cool the batter 8 or more hours and freeze the icecream in a real freezer for not less than 2 before serving so based on that this makes icecream with your mixer and there is no fussing with ice, rock salt and that stuff. It makes good icecream, rich and the variety is unending. Licking the dasher is the reward after you have made your favorite. I love it and I make not only ice cream, but many sorbets and other frozen delights, something you can't do with a stand alone ice cream freezer. You can bet you can impress anyone with this!!!!

Makes ice-cream in 30 minutes!! March 19, 2006 Reviewer:  B. Gould Real Name See all my reviews >

I love this despite what other people are saying, yes you have to freeze the bowl, as with any ice-cream maker, I keep mine in the freezer all the time so its ready when I need it, I have no trouble with it coming over the top of the bowl, if you measure correctly it will not overflow, finally, I can have ice-cream in 30 minutes compared to 45 minutes with my old machine, and yes its soft at first, my kids love it that way, but put it in the freezer and it does harden.

Understanding Ice Cream Makers May 30, 2006 Reviewer:  PLR See all my reviews >

I have this product -- I really like it. Unless you spend big bucks, any ice cream maker requires freezing a bowl of some sort. I keep mine in the freezer at all times. I did make a great buttermilk sorbet this weekend that did not require chilling the batter prior to churning. But, it still needed to ripen (and set) in the freezer. The recipe is in the June 2006 Cooking Light.

You can do better..... October 28, 2005 Reviewer:  Chris (Cerritos, CA USA)  See all my reviews >

You must freeze the bowl for at least 24 hours prior to use, and then you only get maybe 20 or 30 minutes max of cold cold enough to make ice cream (IF you refrigerate your ingredients overnight). There is no lid, so I have improvised and place foil around the top to keep warm air out and the cold in. The ice cream is barely better than milkshake consistency, and the ice cream must be allowed to harden in the freezer. Yes, I use mine regularly, but if I had it to do over again, I would have purchased one of the stand-alone ice cream makers. This bowl is twice the price and half as good.

Tastes just like Cherry Garcia from Ben and Jerry's!!!! July 5, 2007 Reviewer:  Theresa A. Byer "Mama T" Real Name (Tindel Den Cottage, Lake Wales, Florida)  See all my reviews >

We purchased the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment as I love to make homemade yogurts and cheese from organic milk~

This well made attachment was a great investment as our neighbors loved the ice cream as well as I loved making it! My hubby is a true ice-cream gourmet, and he gave it a huge smile after tasting it!

I think we need two just to have enough frozen treats to share with family and friends!

Blessings~

Cuisinart freestanding is SO similar June 7, 2007 Reviewer:  lucidcook "lucidcook" (NYC - the world's great city)  See all my reviews >

My kids took my cuisinart ice cream maker -- which, yes, requires 24 hours in the freezer and requires cold mix or it doesn't work AND a couple hours in the freezer for it to set after churning. As far as I know, all countertop makers do. I like clicking this into the KitchenAid and letting it whirl. We like fresh fruit sorbets. This baby does the job!

great while it lasted May 21, 2009 Reviewer:  Jen (San Diego, CA)  See all my reviews >

I loved my KitchenAid ice cream maker, but it only lasted one and a half years before it broke. The outer plastic cracked and the blue ice inside leaked out all over the freezer. I feel I was very careful about following the directions too. I wrote kitchen aid for a replacement, but the waranty is only a year long. So the bottom line: take really good care of it, and make sure you register it and keep the receipt!

This is an amazing ice cream maker! Much easier and faster than using ice and salt! I love the results! It's a must have!!!
