Info on the #7 plastic used for these items: November 11, 2008 Reviewer:  J. Robinson Real Name (Lafayette, IN)  See all my reviews >

Customer service rep's helpful email in response to my concern over the use of #7 plastic:

"Since the start of BABYBJÖRN AB in 1961, the safety of babies and small children has been our top priority. Therefore, we work in close cooperation with medical experts, parents and independent test institutes when we develop our products.

The products are continuously tested and reviewed to ensure that the highest standards of safety and quality are reached.

When it comes to material, we put a lot of effort into finding materials that meet our high standards of quality and safety.

The rubber base on the BABYBJÖRN® Plate and Spoon is made of PP and TPE and the inner plate is made of ABS,(Acrylonitrile, Butadiene, Styrene).

All our plastic products fulfill the demands of the European (EEC), and the American (FDA) Standard for plastics, and are classified as food-safe.

All our products are PVC, phthalates free and contain no lead.

Bisphenal A (BPA), is a key ingredients in polycarbonate plastics which is a material we do not use in any of our products.

#7 is a classification for other plastics. #7 includes different material and the material we use ABS,(Acrylonitrile, Butadiene, Styrene) is one of them.

Bisphenol A, is a key ingredients in polycarbonate plastics which is a material we do not use in any of our products.

We hope this have answered your question and please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have any further queries.

Kind regards,

BABYBJÖRN AB"

Plastic No. 7 July 11, 2008 Reviewer:  Disappointed Mom (Iowa)  See all my reviews >

I was so excited about these plates until I saw that they are made with No. 7 plastic, which I've read should always be avoided due to BPA. I will never use mine. I'm disappointed!

Best plates and spoons! November 3, 2007 Reviewer:  Mommy D "Stacey" (WI, USA)  See all my reviews >

We have been using this set for several months now and we love it. The spoons are easy for my daughter to hold and the food actually stays on the spoon (well...more than with other spoons). The plate stays on the table well and the raised edges make it easier to get the food onto the spoon. Great product...easy to care for...buy it!

Great plate and spoon set March 21, 2009 Reviewer:  Selph (Philadelphia, PA)  See all my reviews >

We have been using this set for several months now, since our son was about 10 months old. He is now 15 months old and we still love it. The spoons are easy for him to hold and the raised edges of the plate make it easy for him to scoop up the food. The plate stays put on the high chair tray and mealtime is relatively clean. This is the only plate we use, we have one for our house and one at the grandparents. The plate and spoons are also easy to hand wash. I only wish they made a fork for this set.

The best of the best January 16, 2009 Reviewer:  N. Martin Real Name (Elko, NV USA)  See all my reviews >

I started using the spoons with my 18 mo daughter and I thought they were great. When I wanted to place an order for more, I found out [...]was closing and to get the spoons, I had to also get the plate. What a splurge at [price]. I tried the plate and this is the best thing I could have ever received. My toddler went from being a VERY messy eater to a great one when I added the bowl. I looks weird but I am way passed that when I see the results. The rubber base can still be slick on some surfaces but one way or the other it HELPS a great deal. The shape makes it so she can pick all the food up by herself without help. I am splurging again by purchasing 3 more sets but this time on [some other store]Still expensive but way more affordable than $23. Enjoy!

Great spoons, useless plate. September 2, 2008 Reviewer:  Pro/Con Review Mom (LA County, CA, USA)  See all my reviews >

I would give the spoons 5 stars, and the plate 0 star. Just buy the spoons separately and forget the plates.

BB spoons are fantastic for older babies and todlers. They are great especially for cereal:
-Firm, yet not too hard on the gums. Thin edge helps with scooping.
-Wide deep surface means that liquid and liquid-ish food stays on the spoon better.
-The fat handle makes it easier for little hands to hold.
-Cleans nicely in the dishwasher.
Only drawback: A little too wide for the mouth of a younger baby.

BB plates are overpriced with no advantage to justify the price:
-#7 plastic means you really should not warm food up in them,
-baby/todler can pick them up and throw them on the ground just as easy as any other plate,
-no advantage to the 2 part-ness of the plate,
-no lid to put left-overs in the fridge or to transport food in them.

This revolutionized our mealtimes! September 24, 2007 Reviewer:  L. Wileman Real Name (Medford, OR)  See all my reviews >

We bought this for my (now 22 month old) daughter after fighting with those stupid suction cups that never actually stay put on her tray. She was so busy trying to remove the dishes that food would go flying, and she missed the point of mealtimes! It was one big struggle to convince her to ignore the fact that she wasn't supposed to remove the bowl/dish, and eat the food inside it!

Enter in this really odd looking plate, and I decided $20 might actually be worth the sanity that it brings to our table. I wish I had had this dish for my older two children.

For starters, because she can pick it up, she left it alone. It was a magic oxymoron. It doesn't go flying around on the tray/table because the little rubber rim and the shape of the plate keeps it in place very well. She has since learned that when she's finished, she picks up her plate and says done! and if we can't get to her right at that moment, she puts it back on the tray... a little control goes a long way!

The clover shape actually does help them to get their food on the spoon, as well as the shape of the spoons. She was adept at eating with a spoon by 16 months, and I fully attribute it to this plate... because she literally had no interest in spoons or the food in her bowls before we bought this... but she was hungry, and that made for bad chemistry. She has since decided that she needs a fork like the rest of us, and that would be my only complaint... that Baby Bjorn doesn't make a fork set!

I had originally purchased a red plate set (the only set I could find locally) and recently I purchased a green set so that we could master her colors... plus the spoons are amazing. I'm not sure what it is about them, but she spills less yogurt (out of the container), applesauce and manages to eat her entire meal with these spoons as opposed to any other toddler cutlery we have. They really did their design research well.

I really balked at the price, but it was definitely worth it, so much so that I felt like purchasing two was doable. My mom ended up buying a set for her house as well, and she is amazed at the quality and how much it really helped my daughter learn how to eat!

We've put them in the dishwasher and in the microwave (making sure to observe the 90 degree max temp) and the rubber and the plate have held up amazingly. I do, however, hand wash more often than not, but feel like periodically they need to be 'sanitized' by the dishwasher. It also hasn't stained from spaghetti, or retained smells from fish dinners, which is a definite plus for budding palates.

It's a dish, not a toy. No toy review. April 3, 2007 Reviewer:  Emily's mom See all my reviews >

This plate and spoons are great. The non skid bottom works well at the table and also on the high chair tray. The spoons are also very good for kids learning how to use silverware. The plate's raised sides are nice for "loading" the spoons. Nice product.

This plate is the best - we came back for seconds! September 19, 2006 Reviewer:  AF Family (Tucson, AZ)  See all my reviews >

My older daughter started using the training plate and spoons at the age of 11 months. She still uses the spoons for difficult foods, but has been using standard adult cutlery since she was about 20 months. I think this trainer really helped.

I would agree with other reviewers that it is definitely easy to pick up, and therefore NOT spill proof, but we taught her that it was not okay to do that regardless!

We loved this so much that I just bought green set for my second child, who is now 9 months old.

Easy skid bottom August 2, 2006 Reviewer:  Gem State Mama (Idaho, USA)  See all my reviews >

This did not work out how I had hoped. The non-skid bottom? It skated across the high chair tray with ease. And the "sections" (and this is my fault for not looking at the photo closer) aren't really sections. It's a round plate with some dents coming in - the food won't be separated at all. In the photo I thought it looked more divided and in person it is a wide open plate. So, based on those two factors, easy skid bottom and non-divided plate, I'm less than pleased. The spoons are cute.
