My five year old twin boys received this as a gift a few months ago and from the day we received our live ants our facination with this "toy" hasn't wained. In fact, it sits on our dinning room table for daily observation (and I've got a thing about bugs and cleaniness). It is completely low maintenance, we open the lid once a week - that's it! The gel is very cool because you can see ALL the tunnels, front and back. The quality is great as well, it has fallen over once or twice and the lid didn't budge an inch. We've been so happy that I'm giving this as a gift for the next few birthdays.

My daughters, ages 4 and 6, each received one for Christmas last year from their Grandpa. We sent in our request for the ants and they came really fast. The kids were so excited when the ants came. We all loved watching as the ants tunneled through the gel. It was so much fun I think my husband and I enjoyed it just as much if not more than the kids. The ants lasted a few months and then there were dead ones in the tunnels they were not cleaning out, etc. so we threw them away but I would definitely buy another one or give one as a gift. Super cool, durable and the ants cannot escape.
