A good "starter" rice cooker for the uninitiated May 25, 2009 Reviewer:  Elizabeth A. Banks-golub "Betsy" Real Name (Chicago-ish)  See all my reviews >

I was a rice cooker skeptic--and this one made me see the light. After years of cooking rice on the stove with little fanfare, I decided to try a cooker---it was summertime, nice to keep the kitchen cool, and I thought that using the steamer tray for chicken, fish, and/or veggies would be lovely. And it was!

So--I am a convert to using a rice cooker rather than a heavy pot on the stove.

However, this particular rice cooker was not long-lived. With considerable use, it lasted less than a year. During that time, it worked well and convinced me of its necessity. But when it went, it went! At first, the white rice setting went kaput. That was easy enough to deal with; I just used the brown rice setting and kept an eye on the clock. Then, the brown rice setting went. OK--easy enough to use the steam setting...right?

You see where this is going: we ran out of settings!

Having learned the utility of a rice cooker, I'm now in the market for another. We certainly got our money's worth out of this one--truly, it saw a lot of use, and for the price, it was worth it.

Now, it's time to move on to a sturdier cooker that's made to last.

great rice cooker October 5, 2009 Reviewer:  Jenn (Houston, TX)  See all my reviews >

We got this as a gift almost a year ago. We use it fairly frequently, about once a week. It has been great. I have used it with white rice and I have also steamed food in it once. It's so much easier than cooking rice on the stove. You don't need to worry about water/rice boiling over... you just turn it on, and it beeps at your and turns itself to warm when done.

1st time rice cooker user November 18, 2009 Reviewer:  Sarie (San Pedro, CA)  See all my reviews >

Love it! Why have I gone so long without this? Wasn't too expensive. It made perfect rice. It does take a little longer to cook than I thought it would, so you should start making the rice before you start cooking the rest of your meal and the rice should be done. Easy clean up and no more rice film on my stove. Hopefully it lasts a long time. A lot of things don't last long these days because they want you to buy a new one.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM October 16, 2009 Reviewer:  Busy Mom of Toddlers (DC)  See all my reviews >

I would not recommend this rice cooker unless you have all day to make rice. I can usually get dinner on the table in around a half an hour on most nights. The three nights that I tried to make rice with this rice cooker, we ended up eating without the rice and it didn't beep that the rice was done until well after we were all finished with dinner. I'm not exagerating when I say that the brown rice setting took over 1 1/2 hours to make 2 cups of brown rice. And when it was finally 'done' cooking, the rice was still a bit crunchy and had a weird smell. I threw the rice away and returned the rice cooker to target.

I also found that after only 3 uses, there was a starchy film developing in the rubber that seals the lid. The lid doesn't come off, so cleaning was a challenge.
